Contamination or spores???

If there is a thin darkish but not black band running up the side of a stem is it rotten or might it be dropped spores since the veil is open?

Would say spores but without a pic hard to tell what color is it?

When they were fresh it was dark but not black, and very thin not oily or slimy. Now that they're dry it looks darker and black. Could it be a really dark bruise?

Yes, most probably.
Btw, if they're indeed spores, they should come out after you scrape them but i bet it's just heavy bruising.
You also have to consider the condition of the cake/casing they grew from, did it have any contamination ?

No contamination on the casing. Is that a pretty good indicator of the safety.

Yes it is.
You also have to consider the drying method. How long did it take to dry ?
