Customs seized my package

Well I have a little internet business selling sterilized grains and such. I sent a one pound bag of sterilized grain and a 1 pound bag of sterilized compost to Australia from the USA and Australia's customs has seized it and has ordered it destroyed. Any idea why?

Dude there's probably some sanitary rules they have. I watched a show about New Zeland airport customs (close enough) and they won't let a guy keep his apple. Not sure they would be cool with a bag of compost.

Idk what help that is. Do they consider those grains to be genetically modified?
Other than that, no leads brah.

compost may contain seeds and foreign spores, and the government cracks down on the import, simply in an attempt to keep foreign species and invasive species that don't belong there out.
You need a special permit in order to import food products and biologically active things such as bags of compost.

You could post it on Political Discussion and be explained in great detail how Australian Custom Laws are Bush\Obama's fault

Most of the time shipping grains to another country requires a USDA inspection permit.
There could be plenty of other laws that create more specific reasons for the destruction. But generally, at least for any quantity, you need a USDA certification to import grain into another country.
Most domestic grain will not have this certification because you don't need it for sales in the US, most of the time.
I don't really know how you'd get this certificate since most grain that has it done is already earmarked for export. Depending on your location it usually costs about $30 for the certificate. They take a sample and analyze it for pests, mouse turds, broken kernels, dirt, chaff, moisture content, and smell. Then they grade it based on that and issue a certificate.
If I were you I'd just make sure to clearly label the species and the fact that the entire container has been heat sterilized. Most of the time it should get through.

For more detailed and accurate information on what can and cannot be moved over the Australian border, you should refer to the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service Website www.aqis.gov.au
This is the page for finding information on what Horticultural supplies, Plants and Grains are allowed, what permits are needed and how to obtain them>>>> link

Asutralia are paranoid about importantion of fruits/insects/biologicals.
Pretty understandable given their massive agricultural sector (and win sector), but yeah good luck ever getting anything food like or living into Aus.
Anyway that is what I swould suggest - it has the potential for bacteria or disease that will kill crops, and that is not welcome there.
