Enlightenment and the physical body
    #12921464 - 07/19/10 09:21 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Ive noticed that many people believe that when someone becomes enlightened that they no longer exist in the physical form. I don't think this is true, Gautama Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment and to have continued to live on earth and teach for another 45 years.

i think you are still with the physical body but not attatched to it, you know?

Well they probably realise they are consciousness itself, not the body. What is meant by the idea that they no longer exist in the physical form is that they no longer identify with it.

Besides, the body is a holographic illusion. You can literally change your appearance at will when you learn how, just as if it were a ... dream ...

Yeah i think thats true, you would realize that the body has no form just like everything else in the universe. Interesting that i don't think buddha believed in the idea of soul being separate from the body, he was kind of atheist in many ways, just that both the body and the mind are both inherently formless.

Yeah, I've heard that a lot from christian apologists, as if upon enlightenment the body is supposed to dematerialize.

I will give my two cents.

I think this is just a misunderstanding. I think the enlightened people have to ability to CHOOSE if they want to die cause they have mastered the energy gates of the body were the roots of consciousness begin from.

Perhaps enlightenment is the realization that the physical form is merely an illusion and the true nature of reality is radically different than the way most organisms perceive it?

Buddha was unique he was the avatar or the god-man. According to Meher Baba after god-realisation you drop the body after 1-3 days.

"What one thinketh, that doth one become. This is the eternal mystery." -Upanishads

I can't really say I know too much about it, but if you're game, stare at yourself in the mirror and let your thoughts come to a halt. Take note of how your eyes change. Your true form is the form that is there when there is no intrusion by thought. You will look different depending on what's on your mind. Most people never notice this because they're too busy being worker bees or their thoughts are always the same, so they think THEY are always the same.

It's especially noticeable on mushrooms, if you have a low dose or during the come-up, because mushrooms take away all the conventional thought and image you have of yourself (usually). It's no hallucination, as it's constant, and others will notice it.

This is what Bill Hicks meant when he said "we are the imagination of ourselves". You might think of the body or the image in the mirror as well as the appearance of the world around you as being the sum total of your thoughts; what you've willed yourself to be.

I know it sounds mad, but you've just got to accept your mind is doing all this, and in a benevolent way.

I just want to point out how often these contradictory statements are the case with you.
