Need help building positive pressure box
    #1292212 - 02/08/03 09:51 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

My friend wants to build a positive pressure box using a 5"x5" HEPA filter designed for small Shark vacuum cleaners.  Would a 100cfm computer fan be powerful enough to run this??  Also, should the fan be inside the box (i.e. pulling air through the filter) or outside the box (pushing the air through)?

Is there a better route to go than computer fans?  What about bathroom exhaust fans?  I can't help but think 100cfm isn't going to do the job.

Also, after doing a lot of reading up on gloveboxes my friend decided the best route to go is open armholes, so he's wondering if 1 filter + 1 computer fan will provide enough airflow or should he use 2 filters and 2 fans?  The filters are free to me

I'm off to bed, so I will check for replies in the afternoon.

check PM's!!!!

edit: it would be really hard to answer this question without knowing the specs of the filter (size specs don't cut it, you need to know static pressure). I'm thinking 100cfm isn't gonna cut it either (the motor in the shark is like 5.8A!). Experimentation is k3y. Personally, I'd place the filter on the outside. The only reasons I have are that I don't like the idea of an eventually dirty filter being INSIDE the box and also you can spray lysol/other disinifectant directly on the filter while it is running rather easily. I couldn't think of any advantages (other than simplified wire routing) the other way around.

Ok, my friend picked up a 120mm computer case fan and put it up to the filter... LOL. Ummm, no. Not gonna do it.

Someone please give my friend some ideas!!!!! HeI needs to match a fan up to this filter so he can get this box built and try OT's Jar Tek. The filter is about 4.5"x4.5". No clue what the static pressure rating is but he'll try to find it.

Thanks for the info debian!

Someone on another forum suggested a hair blowdryer.  A grand idea!  Anyone have any idea how to disable the heating element without electrocuting myself?

I think my friend is going to walk around Home Depot tomorrow and see if anything grabs his attention.  Was thinking maybe a low powered leaf blower could do the trick, especially if I put 2 of those filters side by side!

Thanks for the recommendation about HVAC shops Moe.  My friend will call a couple tomorrow and see if they can help him.

PS: I knew Moe was a bartender and unlicensed surgeon... but the mad scientist thing really threw me a curve!  That's a pretty full schedule you've got there!  D'oh!

Update! My friend did some shopping at Home Depot today and I believe he has found his solution: a 6" inline duct fan rated for 250 cfm. He found a piece of metal ducting that has a round 6" connector on one end, and the other end opens up to a wider, rectangular opening (~ 12"x6"). I belive it's called a Register Box.

He is going to work on this project over the next few days and will post pics. If it works out well for me perhaps others can use this idea too to make a kick ass positive pressure box!

My only concern now is his fan may be TOO powerful, hehehe. He now plans to have the air routed through 2 filters, but all the same I think it may be necessary to hook some type of voltage regulator up to the fan so that he can throttle back the speed. Any electrical-minded folks out there who can tell me what I need to hook this up to to accomplish this?
