Pinning triggers?
    #12921794 - 07/19/10 10:08 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I have some pf cakes nearly ready and Ive read numerous ways and ideas that trigger pinning, but which ones really work?

one I read was that temp should be lowered by 10 degrees after birth. makes sense to me.

second was cold shocking, but these are cubes so I don't think it will work and I have no plans on trying that unless otherwise stated.

another I read is by RR saying pinning is triggered when myc starts to dehydrate, then the fruit bodies grow in an attempt to release its spores before dying. if this is true, then would it make sense to dry a cake for a short time (to make it think it will die) to trigger pins, then give its proper humidity? after dunking of course.

IMHO it is FAE which causes evaporation of the water causing better pin sets.  That and lighting.

first and formost you need full colonization for triggers to work.  but FAE and correct lighting with stable temps will do the job but dont 4get the humidity has to be in range to keep the newly formed pins growing.    temp drop is not needed for cubes to pin BUT once you have an established pinset you can lower your fruiting temps to get thicker more dence mushies.  they will take a day or 2 longer to mature cuz the lower temps slow the process.  look up JustMe's "cold fruiting cubensis" thread. :super:

well, some people introduce light to their colonizing substrates, so I wouldn't think the light HELPS as much as it encourages pinning.

Fresh air does wonders. Fan as much as you can.

The misting keeps the cakes/substrate in a much moister environment than it was in in the jar. So that encourages some kind of pinset...

casing and the wax paper method do also encourage pinsets but that would not be possible without fresh air exchange.

Im one of them, light does nothing to colonizing jars/tubs/trays until they are fully colonized.

I have everything I ever do on a 12/12 lighting schedule, its called circadian rhythm. :super:

yea, so they have that going for them. The only thing really is instead of  a CO2 rich environment inside the jar, they are exposed to lots of fresh air in a SGFC or any fruiting chamber that works.

also the water evaporating causes pinning as well.

Thanks 13shrooms, in the next few months I will try to apply the same tek to bulk grows using a iso. We'll see how it turns out.
