Grateful Dead Back!

I was listening to the local college Grateful Dead hour tonight, and the lady DJ said, that the Grateful Dead were going to perform under that name (not "The Other Ones") on Valentines Day in SF. Does this mean that they're back? Anyone know the low down?

"The Dead!" Dig it!
Quote:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Seven years ago, when Jerry passed, we made a conscious decision to retire the name Grateful Dead. We did so after some deep soul searching and out of our love and respect for what we had created together. ?After we played our first shows together at Alpine Valley last year, we were all profoundly affected by a sense of awe and connection that none of us had felt since we played with Jerry.
It was a magical occurrence that no one could haveanticipated, yet one we all want to embrace. To us, this was the Grateful Dead- without Jerry. We had stopped being the "Other Ones" and were on our way to becoming something new but at the same time very familiar.
Grateful Dead conjures up many different emotions and feelings for all of us; it was a BAND, it continues to be a community, an approach to life, a electrical current, a dream, the list goes on. Whenever and wherever we played this past year, we all knew that we were experiencing Grateful Dead in its multiplicity of forms. We also know that this would not have been possible without all of you joining to support us. ?Therefore, with the greatest possible respect to our collective history, we have decided to keep the name "Grateful Dead" retired in honor of Jerry's memory, and ?call ourselves: ?"The Dead."
Please join The Dead and very special guests for a Valentine?s Day celebration. All proceeds will benefit the Unbroken Chain Foundation, the Rex Foundation and the Furthur Foundation.
The show will take place on February 14, 2003, at the Warfield Theater. Tickets will be available at noon on Monday, February 10 through Ticketmaster outlets and at Ticketmaster.com and online through The Dead Tickets.

Its just the Grateful Dead without Jerry, its still a good show, I tripped on acid the first time the first time I saw them. They're good, but.... no Jerry

Yeah, I know, but I'm thinking that the name change, from "The Other Ones" to "The Dead," could bring back a greater sense of "community." Jerry is gone, that is true, but I think the whole Dead phenomenon was about more than Jerry. It was really a social phenomenon, or as Bill Graham once said, "that a Grateful dead show was a like getting into a warm and inviting hot tub." I have been to many different kinds of concerts, and Grateful Dead shows were always special. They always had their own unique and inviting "vibe." It was about far more than just the music.
I think this is good news!
But I could just be a square old guy too...

I think this is good news! It`s definatly good new`s The dead was much more than Jerry it involved everybody. Band, staff, roadie`s and most importantly the fans. On a good night we melted into one. A good Greatful Dead concert was the most special place on earth. Sacred holy ground!! This country needs this energy back. Most of us from the old days still keep in touch, but we got nowhere to spread the love. Musically the remaining band member`s are the best of the best. They can bring the magic. I still brings a pain to my chest and a tear to my eye when I look at the right side of the stage and see where Jerry used to stand. I loved him as much as i have ever loved anybody. Though he wasn`t the only one who could bring the magic, on those special night`s when the heavens would open and the light would start to move through us it started with his playing. He was like a big conduit. He often talked about when the music was magical it wasn`t him playing He was mearly along for the ride like the rest of us. He was a man and never wanted to be a leader. Though he realy was the center piece, and this stress of having people think your god or somekind of a guru is what drove him to escape and ultimately die. He was a man like any other man, but he was a very ,very special man. Anyway for the rest of the band i say play.play and play. This world needs joy right now more than anything. Spread the magic, spread it from sea to shing sea. I hope they tour like crazy. I won`t be joining them since i retired when jerry did, but when there in my neck of the woods i will gladly see them. GOD BLESS THE GREATFUL DEAD

I saw the Other Ones when they came through Pittsburgh on their tour. Definitly an awesome vibe. Of course it wasn't exactly like a dead show, cause nothing could match that but there was definilty that vibe that I rememeber.

The acid never left with them. At every show I've seen where a member of the dead plays, Lady Cidney is always in abundance, no matter how dry the area they are playing in may be.

I saw The Other Ones in Detroit on 11-30-02, and they totally rocked the house. It was freezing cold outside, but it couldn't stop the vibe!! Robert Hunter played too, he's a true musical genius. Another thing that I like about Dead shows is hanging out in the parking lot meeting people. It's not like it used to be, but it's still a great time. I can't wait for some of the summer tours like STI and the Allman's to come back into town too!

Yea dude, although Jerry is gone their shows are PACKED FULL OF PEOPLE. The place I was at they had the whole fucking field full of people, which usually gets 1/3 filled up or maybe even 1/2 of the field BUT THE WHOLE FUCKING FIELD WAS PACKED WITH PEOPLE. It was awsome and I'd see em again, they're worth it.

At The Other Ones show here at Madison Square Garden I was sitting next to some 14 year old kids.....They were 6 the year Jerry died, How do they know about the music and the scene? Man these kids were drilling me with questions about the old days at intermission.

I hate to bust your bubble, but either way, it won't ever be the same without Jerry.
Saying that they're returning as a band is just completeley invalid. It's like the Doors going back on tour without Morrison.

Exactly! The Dead was always about so much more than just the music -- it was a social phenomenon, and for many, a lifestyle. It was a bridge back to an earlier idealism, and sense of community, that never should have been lost...

No one ever said it would be the same....but the talent represented by the remaining band members is better than most other bands that have ever existed. Lesh is truly a master on the 6 string and Bobby still sings up a storm, Billy K is among the most under rated drummers of all time! And Mickey is Well Mickey! Add Jimmy Herring and John Molo to the mix and you have one fine Band!

I think its great that they're back.
And I think its good they retire the Grateful Dead name. Like, when I finally go see them, I don't want to have to explain "yeah I saw the dead, after gerry was dead". I'd rather just say I saw The Other Ones. Its so proverbial.
hmm so anyone got a place to crash in SF friday night? Whos down for a last minute trip to SF. This could be the first of many shows, or the only.

The Grateful Dead isn't a group of musicians it was a movement. Jerry wasn't even the original leader of the band, Pigpen was more of that role in the beginning and they continued with out him, the train should of never stopped moving. Garcia wasn't the Grateful Dead. I'm so tired of hearing, "it won't be the same" ... well duh....

After chasing them for 2.5 yrs in the early eighties then settling in Oregon.I was in a special heaven when they played Autzen stadium for the last time in Eugene.3 days of blissful rememberance of a better community of people and sweet times of pure joy.It was rainy and cool but when they went into "here comes the sun" ole sol gladly obliged. Even without Jerry I am glad if even a portion of that magic is returned for me to share with my children. IF YA'LL ARE LISTENING PLEASE COME HOME TO OREGON! A WHOLE GENERATION OF HUMANS NEED WHAT YOU BRING MY BROTHERS. A toast to the "days" and their return! WR
