Anapanasati (mindfulness of breathing)
    #12921503 - 07/19/10 09:27 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Anapanasati has been shown to improve the ability to sustain one's attention to any stimuli as well as improving executive functioning and slow the natural aging process of the brain.

Ānāpānasati (Pali; Sanskrit: ānāpānasmṛti), meaning 'mindfulness of breathing' ("sati" means mindfulness; "ānāpāna" refers to inhalation and exhalation), is a fundamental form of meditation  taught by the Buddha.

That first part about improving the ability to sustain attention, improving executive functioning, and slowing the natural aging process of the brain is really fucking amazing.
I've always been fascinated with the idea of meditating, and it's something that I want to be able to do one day, but I've just never had the patience to sit down and try it.

Now considering we're on the Shroomery it's safe to say some of you have meditated before. Perhaps even tripping. Do you find it to be as beneficial as it seems like it would be to me? ...would you agree with the first part of this post?
One time after a buddy and I ate some acid at the beach, he left to go home and I was just chilling by myself outside. So I sat down on the driveway Indian style and focused on my breathing deeply. It felt fucking awesome. After a minute or so of this it produced this huge smile across my face and I wondered why I didn't do it more often.

"Beginning students are often told to keep their practice short, perhaps about 10 or 15 minutes a day."

Perhaps starting here would be my best bet.

Consistency is the main thing. Even 5 minutes a day is better than an hour once a week.

YES!

I've meditated off and on for over 3 years now, and have been meditating daily for about 5 months now. The benefits are incredible yet subtle. I would recommend meditation to anyone, even 10 minutes a day will have a large impact.

The best way to start really is just mindfulness of breathing-- just sit/lie down in any comfortable position and breathe-- you don't even have to slow your breathing down, just breath normally. Try to be aware of every experience associated with your breathe, feel the flow of air going into your lungs, your muscles and ribs moving to fill and empty your lungs, eventually you will even notice a more subtle energy [prana] that will flow through your entire body as you breathe.

If you just start with that, and only when you want to [don't force yourself to sit and meditate] then over time you will begin to intuitively develop your own meditation method, and will begin to notice more and more changes.

Some other tips:
-don't meditate when tired, very hungry, or right after a meal-- but immediately after waking up is a great time
-at the start of each meditation session, block your right nostril with your finger and inhale through the left nostril only, then block your left nostril and exhale through the right nostril only, repeat this two more times-- then do three breathes the other way, in through the right nostril and out through the left-- and then finally three breathes with both nostrils unplugged-- this will help to clear your mind and balance your prana.

If you want I can suggest a lot more, but I really feel that less information is better then more information. Mediation can only be over explained or under explained, and I believe the latter is better.

The only advice you need, 'be aware of your breathe'

I was always told (and read) that you should count your breathes. I usually count 1 on the inhale 2 on the exhale. I haven't meditated for awhile, because I would always try to do a full lotus position and I am not quite that flexible so I would sit their feeling like my ankles are about to break.

Any tips for focusing on breathing and positions to sit in?

My my. I found this post to be incredibly insightful, thank you for sharing your wisdom, shivas.wisdom.
I tried the little trick with the nostrils, and even though I haven't used it properly yet, I can tell that it will be beneficial. I got light headed and felt dizzy, but good at the same time. Also believe I cleared some things up there, haha.

While I obviously don't know what I'm talking about because I'm a newbie, I found this in that article:

The type of practice recommended in The Three Pillars of Zen is for one to count "1, 2, 3,..." on the inhalation for a while, then to eventually switch to counting on the exhalation, then eventually, once one has more consistent success in keeping track of the count, to begin to pay attention to the breath without counting. There are practitioners who continue to count the breath all their lives as well.

You can try ardha padmasana:

or vajrasana:

those are two simpler meditative asanas, but it depends on your personal flexibility. Find the way that allows you to sit comfortably for the longest period of time.

focusing on breathe? meditation will help with your focus
just try to be aware of your breath-- even if you are constantly being distracted, just slowly bring your awareness back to your breathing. With time it will increase.

I find Ujjayi pranayama help to bring focus to breathing because it creates a hissing sound in your throat as you breathe.

Quote:

1. Inhale and exhale deeply through the mouth.

2. On the exhales, begin to tone the back of the throat, slightly constricting the passage of air. Imagine that you are fogging up a pair of glasses.

3. Once you are comfortable with the exhale, begin to apply the same toning of the throat to the inhales. This is where one of the names of the breath comes from: it sounds like the ocean.

4. When you are able to control the throat on both the inhale and the exhale, close the mouth and begin breathing through the nose. Continue applying the same toning to the throat that you did when the mouth was open. The breath will still make a loud noise coming in and out of the nose. This is Ujjayi breath.

I breathe this way by feeling as if an energy is passing through my throat and bypassing my nostrils completely-- very invigorating. I'm in the process of slowly slowly making this my constant way of breathing.

Thanks for the tips and when I said focusing on breathing I meant that my mind wanders very easily so focusing on breathing is at times difficult. Once I have it down I usually think "Wow, I got this!". Then I realized that I just lost focus, and then I start into a though loop of trying to go back then realizing I lost focus again. At that point things don't work very well.

And, for the breathing technique you recommended it just sounds like I am trying to clear my throat. Apparently I need to work on that a bit.

You should hear a sound, like a light snoring sound, when you get it right.

But yes, your mind wandering happens with everyone. Let the wandering thought finish and then bring yourself back on path.
