So.Cal. Shrooms anyone?
    #1284709 - 02/06/03 11:07 AM (18 years, 11 months ago)

Hey evrybody,

I know there are some hunters from Southern California out there. I have never hunted in the area and was hoping for some tips.

I own Paul Stamet's Guide to psilocybes so I just need some general pointers.
What time of season can I find and where?

Any bit of info from those experienced would be much appreciated!

Hey man,

I know the San diego region pretty well. Unfortuently, it will be extremely hard to find any actives growing.

First off, you will definetly need to find some horse stables, and cow pastures. Panaeolus subbalteatus grow from horse manure piles...and are found mainly in the fall, winter and spring.

I haven't really heard of any findings of Psilocybe cubensis and/or Panaeolus cyanescens, however some sources to say they can be found in Southern California.

If you are any where near Rancho Santa Fe, you can probably find some horse stables in there. Also Escondido has some horse stables.

Do a search here on the boards for those species. I have had some good luck finding the subbalteatus, and have some pictures that you can check out here to help identify them.

What do I do once I find horse stables?

Should I just sneak around the area looking for shrooms? Will they have some place where they throw out the dung?

I don't want to get shot!

There aren't any species that I can find on lawns or in wood chips?

Thanks for the help!

If you're going to be hunting for mushrooms on private property, ask for permission. Tell them you're an amateur mycologist studying mushrooms and that you'd like permission to look for them on their property. If they ask what kinds you're looking for, tell them "any kinds you can find." Ask them if they've seen any around and where, too. Ask them if there are any areas you should be careful of. Be way polite and nice.

Have some mushroom hunting equipment with you. A basket is good. Some waxed paper or waxed paper bags or brown paper lunch bags. A field guide or two (Mushrooms Demystified and Audubon are excellent). A pocket knife.

Don't tell them you're there to look for "shrooms, man". Don't come dressed like you just came from a Grateful Dead concert. Don't pick only the ones growing off the horse apples, unless that's all there is. Don't leave any gates you go through open, unless they were open to begin with (they will be very unhappy if you let their livestock out). Don't let yourself believe that the people whose land you're looking on are stupid - they probably know a lot more that you think.

If they told you where some mushrooms were, go find them. Go back later and, if you can, tell them what kind they are and if they're poisonous or not. Thank them for letting you look around.

I've gone onto private property using these guidelines many times and most ranchers don't have any problem with it. Some of them even want a percentage of the morels I might find.

Happy mushrooming!
