What is Zen? The answer..
    #1291443 - 02/08/03 03:50 PM (21 years, 1 month ago)

What is Zen? Zen is an empty chair in a room full of people.
What does that mean? Let me put it in simple terms. Zen is something
that many people can attempt to understand, but only a few will. Any
of the many people in that crowded room can sit in the chair, they
only have to learn to understand the chair. Zen is a language as well
as a mindset. Quite often, the language is spoken in quite cryptic and
often seemingly nonsensical words and terms.
Postulate: any nonsensical phrase can be made into logic when
applied to any situation. For example. When asked why the sun rises in
the East, one could say, only because that is the best place for it to
rise. How would I put that into logic? Think about how the earth
orbits around the Sun. If the earth orbits around the Sun, and rotates
on it's axis the way it does, wouldn't it be nonsensical of the Sun to
rise anywhere else, as far as science is concearned?
Zen is more logical than mysterious. Those who have a false
perception of logic won't understand Zen. Neither will those who don't
understand that all logical events have a sense of abstractness to
them. For example, one plus one is two. But how do you define one?
What is one? You'd think that because "one" is a mathematical integer,
it wouldn't need definition. It would just "be". Quite the opposite is
true. Everything we know, and everything we sense, is based on rules
that apply to this world. That statement is true, whether or not there
is more than one world.
What is enlightenment? Enlightenment is a camel with two
faces. What does this mean? Think about it, and if you come up with a
seemingly logical answer that you feel can be true, you may be a in
the Zen mindset.
All questions in Zen have many differnt answers, and all
answers many different meanings. One answer to my above question, is
that enlightenment is two differnt things to two different people. What
enlightenment means to me, might be something totally differnt to
another person. So you see, enlightenment and Zen are two totally
subjective things. If you feel interested in Zen, find a teacher,
keeping in mind the things I've said, and go at it! And learn! But
teach yourself. Don't expect the teacher to give you a cakewalk. It
can take years to understand Zen. Or, it can take seconds. In regards
to this, I'll leave you a message and let you discover your own
meaning to it.
The path of zen is a rainfall that end with the setting of the sun. If
you can't figure out what this means, do what Buddha did: sit under a
tree for as long as needed and contemplate my words. It will come to
you, if you have the desire.

WHAT TIME IS IT?
In our clock-studded society, the answer is never more than a glance away...The elusive infinitesimal of "now" dissolves into a scattering flock of nanoseconds. Bound by the speed of light and the velocity of nerve impulses, our perceptions of the present sketch the world as it was an instant ago-for all that our consciousness pretends otherwise, we can never catch up...even in principle, perfect synchronicity escapes us. Like strange syrup, time flows slower on moving trains than in the stations and faster in the mountains than in the valleys.
Our intuitions are deeply paradoxical. Time heals all wounds, but it is also the great destroyer. Time is relative, but also relentless. There is time for every purpose under heaven, but there is never enough. Time flies, crawls and races. Seconds can be both split and stretched. Like the tide, time waits for no man, but in dramatic moments it also stands still. It is as personal as the pace of one's heartbeat but as public as the clock tower in the town square. Time is money...it is the partner of change, the antagonist of speed, the currency in which we pay attention. It is our most precious, irreplaceable commodity. Yet still we say we don't know where it goes, and we sleep away a third of it, and none of us can account for how much we have left. Time is the barrier between our life, and the inevitable event of our death, which steadily diminishes in relentless waves of attoseconds...Time and memory shape our perceptions of our own identity. We may feel ourselves to be at history's mercy, but we also see ourselves as free-willed agents of the future. Time is a dimension like those of space...yesterday, today and tomorrow are all equally concrete and determined. The future exists as much as the past does; it is just in a place that we have not yet visited. Time is the substance from which we are made...Time is a river which carries us along, but we are the river...Time is a Tiger that devours us, but we are the Tiger...Time is the fire that consumes us...but we are the fire.... man it's time for me to get a frickin watch already...

Great answers to a usless question. I find that though the mind and body is dependant on time, we can become adjusted to the lack of perception of time, without too much deprivation. It just takes practice.
