Woodchips in substrate for cubensis?
    #1287127 - 02/07/03 09:23 AM (19 years, 7 months ago)

While I was drilling some holes in some wood with my forstner bit (sp?) I noticed it made cool little cone shaped shavings. I was thinking that adding this to a substrate would help add air pockets to the mix while at the same time helping to retain a little moisture.

I was wondering if this would have any adverse affects on the growth of the mycelium, is it possible that it may reject the wood? I of course would be adding the usual growth mediums to the mix (grain flours, etc).

I know Cubensis isnt a wood-loving species, but would the mycelium colonize the wood at all, even if it wasnt fully coated with flour? I was planning on picking up another box of jars today and figured I would give this a try on two of em or so. Would sawdust have any effect? FYI, most of my cakes get cased, but some of the better ones just get birthed and dunked. Any information yall could give me would be cool, I dont want to waste time/effort/and jars  Specifically if serious contamination would be a problem.

You never know, sometimes experiments pay off... Thats why I love this hobby

P.S. - I believe the wood is oak... And I also have yellow pine (no shavings though). I think I need to get into outdoor cultivation of wood lovers... Anyone wanna send me a free print? (j/k)

To give is to live...

personally haven't trried it so hey, maybe it works like magic; but the reason I haven't tried it is because any nutritious surface that the mycelium doesn't colonize (and on wood it cannot) contaminant organisms WILL. 'nuff said?

I use farm manure that has wood chips, wood shavings, etc mixed into it. Performs exceptionally well, make sure the wood is relatively clean though.

I have recently discovered an excellent germination/spawn mix using 50/50 WBS/alder smoke chips which I cook together. The wood soaks up nutes from the grain water but remains very loose and airy and grows myc all over it.This is very handy when spawning as it increases the points of inoculation dramaticly.I will be spawning a large quantity of pastuerized manure/hay soon and will post pics of the wood chip/WBS spawn and the substrate it is going into.IMHO wood chips are far better than vermiculite for holding moisture and maximizing inoculation points in spawning.I will case and fruit a quart and relay whether it is nutritious enough to support fruiting.
PS I am attempting to encourage cubes to grow on fresh alder so this actually is a first step in finding a wood eater by numerous multispore inoculations on ever increasing percentages of fresh alder.WR

To old for this place
