kinda weird question, what do shrooms "eat"?

what is the thing that shrooms feed off of? like the nutrient? is it fat? carbohydrates? what? sorry if this is a dumb question, i dont know exactly how to word it, so if you understand it and know the answer please feel free to contribute it, but if you dont understand it then just ignore this.

i'm no expert but when you think about it they eat grains right? composed mainly of complex carbs. as for natural food, dung. well that's just partially digested grasses and hays and such, right? once again, mostly complex carbs.
i'm not sure on this but it is what i always thought they ate, i'm sure anno will give you a more correct response soon enough  :smirk:

mushrooms release digestive enzymes which may break down sugars, carbohydrates, proteins, etc... and after they break down they absorb the smaller molecules.
