Driving to NYC - What to do with car?

A friend and I are planning on making a small road trip eastward and ending up in NYC in a month or so to meet up with some friends. I have no real desire or need to drive in the city but was wondering what the options were to dealing with the car?
I've read suggestions about parking at one of the NJ train stations and riding the train into the city. Not sure what the long term parking situation is like there or if there is a better option. Figured I'd ask on here to get some input.

It's best to drive. If you don't feel comfortable driving, just offer to pay for the gas.
It's a bad idea to leave a car sitting in an unknown area for a long time.
Also, it depends how long "long term parking" is. If you leave it in a train station for more than 24 hours, your shit is toast. At least with most of the ones from say Edison and up. You could always park in Newark Airport's long term and then take the shuttle to the train station. From there, Northeast Corridor train will take you to Penn Station. Probably gonna get a bit pricey though.
I'll keep thinking.

Take a small loan out on it depending on how long you are going to be there and tell them to take the car in their lot and don't spend any of the money.........and just pay the small interest fee depending on the loan and length and it'll be cheaper than any other parking garages and and.........nvm It'll end up like ferris bueller.

I don't mind driving around NYC but I assume it would be more expensive to park it in the city and drive it around than to find a long term lot to leave it in. I've never seen the NYC parking situation but from everything I've heard its pretty hard to find parking and expensive when you do find it. I've never really heard a locals opinion on it though.

Parking uptown isn't too hard to find if u have like 20-30 minutes to drive around and a find a spot yourself it may help. If you get lucky you may find some neighborhoods like Harlem that don't have so many parking meters around some areas and u could just leave your car there for a couple of days.

i would say don't even try to find parking in manhatten, its defintely doable but you have to know the right streets at the right times of day and all that shit.
i would agree with leaving it parked in NJ or brooklyn or something like that.
