How did you sterelize them? It doesn't seem that you could have gotten them hot enough to sterelize them if they are in plastic, but I'm not sure. Did you try all of the hardware stores around you, and couldn't find any canning jars? How about the craft-type stores? What part of the country do you live in?

I've heard of a similar method at hyperreal.org Go there click on chemistry. Then mushrooms, it should be there somewhere. The method used a plastic pail in the microwave, somehow I don't remember. Its not a very long read so its worth a look.

i sterilized them in the microwave. i put the jars in the bottom of a ceramic pot with a couple of inches of water, making sure that the water boiled for 10 min. seems like it worked ok to me, but i am new at this.

But how will you get them out if it's not tapered? The shoulder of the jar would prevent this.

These containers are fine. People also use these throw away gladware containers. From what I am told they can be pressure cooked.

they arent tapered the wrong way, i mean. the top of the jar is bigger than the bottom, so i know it'll come out. i have another question, though. i sterilized then in teh microwave, but ony for like 15 min. the water boiled and everything, but not for an hour because the plastic would've melted. i know that to kill most bacteria (like food borne) it is how hot it gets (160 f), not necessarily how long it is that hot. the cups were really, really hot when i took them out and they took like 45 min to cool down. should i be ok? any other tips? b

Limegreen, or any one else for that matter. I have stoped using my canning jars in favor of filter patch spawn bags and loose grain. However I now have 7 dozen or so canning jars that I do not use (I am not one for canning spag sauce or jams) any way if you can trust me enough I will sell/ship them to any interested party. Drop me an e-mail if you are interested. And I know that alot of you are way too paranoid to even think of this but trust me I have sold an item here before.
