Foil bags...good for bulk?
    #1288269 - 02/07/03 11:17 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I was at the supermarket yesterday, when something caught my eye. Self sealing oven-proof bags!! Anyway i picked some up.
My idea is to boil some rye for 1/2 an hour, strain, and then fill the bag up and seal it. It seals by rolling over the foil ends, so its not airtight. I'd then pc for an hour and let cool. Then i'd do a grain to grain innoc, by opening the foil lid and putting a bunch of colonised spawn in, seal it back up, and then shake it around to disperse and leave it for a week or so.
It should work! I am very hopefull....what do you guys think?

if it's not airtight, sounds inviting to contams.

Yeah, but when i do pint jars of rye, i never screw the lid on, i just rest it on top, so they are open to the air, but rarely get contaminated. The seal folds over two or three times so air could not easily get at it.

maybe worth a try, if you think it would work. Can't hurt ;p

I will, but i'll need to wait for a jar to colonise because i dont think it would work if i did a spore innoculation.  I do a post if it works...

Someone else had posted a pic that showed a spawn jar with an airlock 'button' from a foil coffe bag in the jar's lid. Maybe fill the mouth of the bag with polyfil, fold it over 3-4 times and staple it shut. Maybe.
Perhaps you couild put a silicone blob on the outside for injecting through.

if you're talking about plastic/foil, it would pc just fine .
the problem would be, during colonization, you can't see what is going on in there .

There's Oven Bags, they're plastic and clear instead of foil, i've used them on occassion to sterilize soil in the microwave, i think that'd work, but the problem is sealing them off.. but it's worth a try

Ya man i would scrap thje foil bag idea use glad oven bags made of plastic. Fill the bag and then fold it over a few times and make your seal there. If you dont have an impulse sealer buy one of those pen torches and heat a coat hanger (use gloves) and press that down on the seam and release. I use to do this before i got an impulse sealer off e-bay for $20.

i'd be hard pressed to believe that it is the mycelium that is eating through the aluminum. i'll betcha it has much more to do with dung. maybe I'm wrong... hey, I've got some extra shit lying around, I'm gonna toss it in an aluminum pie pan and see if it burns through. any more input on this?

I'd bet that its the acidity of the mycelium wastes that eat through the aluminum. They seem to produce an excess of waste when growing through dung.

Does this happen with compost as well? i've always used rubber for all my projects.

it seems to happen anytime you use aluminum. it only occurs after prolonged use though, so i don't think single use would pose a problem. i too believe it's a result of the metabolic wastes.

Well lucky for me i got the plastic ones that were beside the foil....its just that plastic didn't look to pc proof, but i pretty sure it is.
Im going to do a grain to grain with it tonight, so i'll post results in the next couple days.  Im not too worried about the seal, as long as water doesn't get in during pc.  I'll just open the top and throw in the colonised rye, thats what i do with pint jars and they are usually done on day 5.

Hey, how fast does mycelium eat through alluminium?  Im using metal pans, with compost...
