plastic petri dishes usually come in a plastic sleeve(bag) that has be radiated to make it sterile.
if your petri dishes didn't come in this bag...or the bag is torn...there is a chance they aren't sterile anymore.
Why would you have to pc them?

if your cloning with added peroxide you dont need to p.c IMO
but if your going to start spores you can microwave sterilise them in short burst(short bursts are important because you dont what the agar to bubble up and stick to the lid)
Edit lol forget what i said and listen to them i was microwaving mine lol

Are you sure they aren't already sterile? I get sterile plastic petris sealed in sleeves of 20. But if they aren't sealed then they are useless because, as you said, you can't sterilise them.

Thanks for the quick responces yall!
It came in a plastic sleeve bag, but it was open on top. Could i not just thouroughly wipe with isypropyl 70%? Thats what i use to sterilize syringes and tools , and containers....
Would i need to sterilize my agar mixture still?

You always need to sterilize the agar.
I have glass petris, so I sterilize in the PC then wipe down with rubbing alcohol prior to pouring, if you wipe down, then pour your agar while still hot. It should be fine.

Hmmm, okay, im glad to hear i can re-use my plastic dishes... i guess i'd sterilise my agar in a pint jar then. Any advice on keeping itfrom bubbling over? i heard just letting it cool naturally will sufice.

yes, you'll have to sterilize your agar mixes. be careful that the vessel you PC your agar in will hold about three times the total volume of agar mix and water you are PCing if you have never PCd agar before in case it bubbles over.

Dont all the agar recipies make about a litre of stuff? good for around 30 petri dishes? i dont think i have a container wich will hold three times that volume and still fit.
What causes the bubbling? its rapid temp change right? would letting it cool at room temp cause it to boil over?

There are reusable plactic petris available, made of polypropylene, fully autoclavable.
For instance http://www.mycosupply.com/lab%20supplies/index2.html .

I have been using those Grolsh Beer bottles somebody once talked about. The first time I used it I closed the lid on all the way. When I took it out and opened it ,The agar shot out like a damn cannon all over my kitchen. I now keep the lid open and just cover it with foil. I still have some left over in the bottle could I still use it. Its still clean but it has solidified. Would just heating it like a baby bottle work?
