seriously though. i have a high def cable box, a ps3, and a computer that are all being plugged into this tv.
is there such a thing as an hdmi switch? like the old RCA style switches so you could have more than one device on the same input on the tv? I think this tv only has 1 HDMI input and I'd, preferrably, like to have the cable and my ps3 on hdmi. Any thoughts as to how to accomplish this, other than buying a better tv with multiple inputs?

I really don't get all the anti-tv people. why does it matter so much to you guys if I spend MY money on a tv? Out of all the electronics I have, my current CRT is the only thing that's from the 90s. not even my blender, microwave, toaster, or toaster oven are from the 90s, they are all from the 2000's. So I decided to upgrade my tv to a very well priced, more modern one (not cutting edge, just LCD, 44", nothin over the top, but now I can at least make use out of my blu-ray player on my ps3. and the high def from my cable.
oh and why its not a waste of money: I'm not broke, I just paid my truck off (Freeing up $500/mos), I have a boat, a motorcycle, and anything else that I want. All i want right now is a new tv to replace my old. smaller, crappy one. Why does this bother you guys that much??  I don't get it...

too late...
I didn't have a choice really (I mean I did, but not for what I was trying to do). I got lucky. This tv was an open box display unit. Still comes with full factory warranty, 0% apr for 6 months. 12.9% after that (I'll be able to pay it off in the 6 months anyways, I coulda paid cash right now if I wanted to). They had some other open box units but they were larger, more expensive ones I wasn't interested in.

I'd guess that a new 44" will definitely have 3+ HDMI inputs.
Yes, they make HDMI switches.
A better option may be to get a relatively cheap, 5.1 surround sound system that includes a receiver for HMDI switching.
Finally, it's probably not a big deal about the HDMI anyway. Despite people claiming it's superiority, on a 44" set you will probably notice very minimal difference between component cables and HDMI.

Yea the picture quality wont' be that different, if different at all. However HDMI is nice in that it's one cable so it massively reduces cable clutter. I have an audio/video receiver that I use to switch all the HDMI inputs. It also converts any video signal into up to 1080p

I, for one, congratulate your purchase.
I'm also thinking about getting a big display to plug my PS3, NAS into. Also will be looking to plug a new computer into it when I get round to buying one. I'm not so bothered about it for actually watching TV, but I'm sure I will a bit.

Of course you won't notice a difference between component and HDMI - they both have the ability to output 1080p  .
Now HDMI and composite, yes, you will DEFINITELY notice a difference. Composite is shit, and so old - once you've seen 1080p you will change your tune.

true however HDMI supports DTS-HD and TrueHD audio. using something like toslink (which should be the bare minimum nowadays) youll only be able to get Dolby Digital or DTS.
dont get me wrong, toslink connections are still quite good but it could be better.
if youre an audio nerd then this might make a difference to you.

My laptop has HDMI output and I have a remote keyboard and mouse... add my 1080p HD to that equation and you get 
I recently moved my HDTV into my bedroom because I cleaned and rearranged the thing, making it a kickass chill spot. Last night my roommate's obnoxious, socially retarded friend came in and asked when I'd be moving it back into the living room. I was like,

Initially, many devices would not output 1080p over component cable due to copyright issues. I'm not sure what the current standards are.

Agree totally. A swank-ass TV set is definitely not a waste of money. Just because you don't like TV doesn't mean everybody who does is "wrong." Just because there are stupid people who waste their lives with TV doesn't mean TV makes you stupid.
Anyway, pretty sure there is an improvement in quality with HDMI. I have a 360 that runs on component cables (at 1080p) and a PS3 that runs on HDMI, and the PS3 generally looks crisper and has finer color contrast.

i have a 60" HDTV and dont have cable at all.
with the amount of content legally available online for little or no cost i really dont see a need.
Hulu, Netflix Watch Instant, Snagfilms, ATDHE, Revision3, Vodo, etc..
i dont see a whole lot of point to cable tv.
i watch an obscene amount of film though. movies are by far my artistic medium of choice. there are some movies that are just not as enjoyable on a small display (Cloverfield is the first that comes to mind). a nice tv makes sense for me.. cable does not.
calling out someone because you dont agree with what they buy is pretty lame. dont be a douche.

If I could get CNN/HLN/MSNBC/C-Span(2)/etc over the web, or over the air, I wouldn't have cable. well I would cause I have free cable (benefits of smoking the maintenance guy out  ) but yeah, That's pretty much all I watch. And craig ferguson. Sometimes I flip through, but everything else I usually watch on hulu/torrent anyways (house, Deadliest Catch, few others) and I could just stream from my laptop to my ps3 to my tv.
but yeah, my deciding factor for buying my tv is when I'm playing madden my tv isn't clear enough to even read the audibles menu when it pops up. seriously.

I enjoy the programming. its not just about the news. I still get a lot of my news online.

Honestly, there ARE some good shows on TV, and it's just a lot more enjoyable to kick back in front of a TV than it is to hunch over a laptop searching out all the clips and shows I'm after. It's also good for blowing up stuff you find on that laptop and sharing it with people.
Like seriously, I know vegetation isn't too good for cultivating brainpower or for empowering yourself in general, but in moderation it's a damn fine way to relax, and nothing provides an opportunity for vegetation like a nice fat TV.

I could pay $300 for that.
or I could keep my free cable, download the shows I miss (which I already do) and stream them through my ps3 to my tv (which I also already do).
besides, the fact remains that I currently have a 15+ year old tv, and I want a new one. I'm not changing anything else than that tv . I ALREADY have free cable, I ALREADY have a ps3.
