Updated pictures and TEK for 55 Gallon Barrel Sterilizer
    #12864337 - 07/07/10 09:35 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

There's now a 55 Gallon Drum Sterilizer page for grains and bulk substrates such as supplemented sawdust on mushroomvideos.com.  The entire project cost about what you'll pay for an AA-941 and it holds 100 pounds of grains or bulk per run.

We mix up our substrates in a cement mixer, and then fill filter patch bags with 5 to 7 pounds of substrate.  The 55 gallon drum sterilizer can hold 20 substrate bags per run.

Have u tested the running temperature? or placed some autoclave tape inside to see how hot it gets in there?

id like to make a setup similar to that seeing that you have had good results with this type of sterilizer, i always thought it wouldnt get hot enough, i think 120C is the benchmark.

thanks for the great pics and wonderfully explained design in the link.

It's not just temperature, but time.  121C for 20 minutes is the standard.  However, lower temps for a longer time also work, as this shows.  I've been running it 8 to 10 hours at 1 1/2 to 2 psi.  I supplement with oat bran on some substrates and rice bran on others.  There hasn't been one single contaminant yet after several thousand pounds of grains and/or supplemented substrates, so it must be working.  I gave it time to fail, but it hasn't. . .yet.

At my elevation, 2 psi is close to the boiling point of water at sea level, since water boils at 205F/96C here.

Nah, not overkill is 12 inches deep of concrete slab. You said it. At least you know that thing
ain't gonna' shift in the winter. Due to, repeated heating and cooling cycles.

Hahaha, Nice copper tubing, excees steam, heat your grow rooms, system. 55 Gallon Drum Pressure
Sterilizer. I am really liking this idea.

Genious work with the spin valve utilization as a means of controlling steam, down to the temperature,
to keep your substrates in a steady flow of steam, very impressive.

Having to wrap and unwrap insulation before and after each use, with what appears to be cheap ducting
tape and yellow insulation, is what I call dedication to the hobby. That yellow insulation is the
itchiest. Most likely because it is the cheapest.

On that note you could replace your yellow "itch"/duct tape insulation job, before and after each use,
with arma-flex copper piping insulation sticks. Arma-flex copper piping insulation comes split down
the middle with a sticky adhesive to close together after being fit around pipe. My suggestion would
be to replace the sticky with a layer of Velcro over it and cut to fit around your valves and "T"
fittings. This way you would have you insulation in sticks, split down the middle for easy and
convenient replacing of the piping insulation. For the heating down and warming up, after and before
each cycle.

Thanks for sharing this idea with the community and giving us the birds eye view of the current events
of your 55 gallon drum pressure sterilizer, as they unfold. Plus 5 :mushroom2:

Is this 55 gallon drum pressure sterilizer tek going to be in your next version of your Let's grow
Mushroom videos?

I don't remove the insulation from the copper tubing between use.  I only remove the R-12 bats from around the barrel so the substrates can cool.  It's house insulation, intended to go between the studs.  It's not too itchy at all.  I have another brand new roll of it in my barn, so when that finally wears completely out, I can replace it.

Hey RR, have you considered putting an electronic low water cut off wired to an automatic water feeder on the boiler?

The electronic LWCO utilizes the naturally occurring electrolysis in the water to determine the water level. If the water level drops below the probe, it sends juice to an automatic water feeder which runs until the LWCO probe is submerged again. And you can pipe the water feeder for automatic and manual feeds in one system.

Yea, I've used capacitance sensors in everything from industrial cooling towers to the fuel tanks on my airplane.

However, it takes three days for the boiler to run out of water when it's running 24/7 so there's really no need.  Every day when I'm loading substrates, I hook the hose up and slowly fill it, with the propane burner turned full blast.  If I regulate the flow of water(using a garden hose), I can do it without ever losing pressure.

As a retired electrical engineer, I've realized the importance of 'low-tech' when it comes to simple things such as terrariums and this boiler/sterilizer system, which I built for under $400.

I could load it with all the bells and whistles, but then it would 'still' be just a $20 used 55 gallon barrel, but at a very high cost.  Certainly, if anyone builds a system like this, don't ever think you can 'set it and forget it', since it needs babysitting for at least the first two hours after pressure is reached.  After that, it's stable, and we take advantage of that time to go hiking/backpacking daily in the national forest that joins our property line.

Below is a picture of my dog and I about a mile from our house and mushroom farm.  The sterilizer was in operation unattended(but stabilized) the day we took this pic.

I saw on a website the other day that a rubber toilet flapper would guarantee that a 55 gallon drum (used for steaming) would keep a low psi safely instead of using a pressure relief valve so that it wouldn't blow up. What do you think about that RR?

Sure.  One could also build a home made manometer with plastic hose.  If the pressure gets too high, it simply blows the water out of the manometer and releases the steam.  I just watch mine like a hawk during the first two hours until it all stabilizes, and then I only check the gauge once and hour or so, but it never moves after the first two hours.

My relief valve will blow at 5 psi, but I doubt seriously the sterilizer barrel would ever reach that without the seal around the lid blowing out first.

Hi folks,

For my inaugural post on The Shroomery I'd like to thank RR for generously sharing his experience and journey growing mushrooms.  Before I've even started mine, I've learned a lot just searching and reading posts on this website.  (Of course, I've also read GGMM from cover to cover.) This particular innovation, though, the relatively inexpensive, 55 gallon drum super-pasteurizer beats all.  I have researched autoclaves quite a bit, realizing that they are the most important limiting factor to commercial production, and as far as I can tell, this breaks a real barrier for people, like me, who plan on growing commercially but can't afford a commercial autoclave.

Thank you, RR!
