I've ordered some mandrake seeds (true Mandragora officinaris) both white and black mandrakes. I was wondering, what would be a good soil mix for them? I use my own variation of soil for cacti, so I'm wondering what would be the best for mandrakes.
I know they are related to tomatoes (Solanaceae).

White mandrake is Mandragora officinalis and Black mandrake is Mandragora autumnalis. Yes they belong in the Solanaceae family. A thing that would be best in your soil is vermiculite. The root can easily rot. Here in mediterania is better to grow M. autumnalis.

The plants : White mandrake flowers June-July and black mandrake in the fall. I have two M. autumnalis and they are at perfect health. In the other hand when winter came my M. officinalis died. They both need partial shade and not to much sun. Leaves must NOT stay too long in contact with water 'couse they will rot.

You know a Mandragora root can reach up to 1,5 m long! You better wait some years for it.

Growing : Soak your seeds in a clean cold water and put it in the fridge for 14 days. Every day change the water with new one. After 48 hours throw away the seeds that are floating.

If you want to use your own soil combination use : 2 parts peat, 2 parts sand, and 1 part loam.

Tips : Eaven if your plant throws all of it's leaver, don't throw ir away. It's just in hybernation mode due to some problems. My M. autumnalis were without leaves and almost dried for about 3 months. But when Fall came, it started giving leaves again.

Because mandrake has such long roots they should be planted in the ground or a deep pot.
