    #1285205 - 02/06/03 01:20 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I like casings too, were thinking about using casings with birdseed using a 50/50 vermaculite/coco fiber Bottom & A 100% coco fiber Top , Then recasing to acchieve even pinset. Thinking a 3 inchs of birdseed between?? Is that about right??

I use quart jars of birdseed. I mix the birdseed 2:1 with vermiculite right after it is fully colonized before i case it. Using this method I usually get >1 ounce per quart jar.

Do you mean dry ounce or wet ounce?

I would say the difference in yield re: 1/2 pint vs. quart jars is more an issue of cakes vs. casings. Do 4 quart jars, and experiment with some casing teks. That's a gallon of spawn  Being conservative, you could inoculate 5-10 gallons of substrate. Beats the pants off of 4 cakes ...

I got about a dry ounce per 9 x 12 in. casing. Each casing was made with 3 half pint brf cakes. I cased with scotts 3 in 1, vermiculite, and sphagnum peat moss.
