Weird ass fungi I saw...
    #1285184 - 02/06/03 01:13 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

The other day when I was walking around I found a huge black mushroom thing, it was no gills and a weird wavy cap, the stem looks like vines or something with holes etc... Any idea what the hell it is?!?

Hrmmm, maybe an elfin saddle?  I found a few down here in seattle a few days ago.

(pic courtesy of angryshroom  )

Look like that?  The ones I found were larger and had darker caps, nearly black.  Species name of the one pictured is  Helvella lacunosa .

lol, seriously... sounds like a black fluted elfin saddle to me

So BlackZombie: Where did you find the mushroom? Like what kind of habitat was it growing in?

In the above picture, the mushroom shown was growing under Oak, madrone and some pine as well. There were some parasitic elfin saddle growing around, and they looked similar however were pure white.

That is exactly what I saw, it's nice to add some edibles to the list of mushrooms I can identify and I think I'll try cooking one up, anybody know of a good recipe?

Yeah, I would make sure that it was really that mushroom above. Arora states that it is rather tough and bland, however some sources highly rate it.

Make sure you are 110% sure you have this mushroom...

Please don't eat any of these.

Dr. Nancy Smith Weber is probably the greatest curently living authority on morels and false morels and I have heard her state several times that false morels should not be eaten. Many of them contain chemicals which break down into methylhydrazine when cooked - methylhydrazine is a very nasty, potentially deadly poison. There are also many chemicals in them which have been shown to be strongly carcinogenic.

Er, yeah, I wasn't talking about the false morel....

Toxicman, are you also saying that the black fluted elfin saddle should not be eaten as well?

I would agree with you, just because of the texture of them...very tough, and not very meaty. Not really worth the time.

False morels should definetly NOT be eaten... sorry for any misunderstanding.

Hey Toxicman,

How about Gyromitra gigas, the snowbank false morel?  I heard those were edible/non-toxic and good (Mushrooms Demystified), I know of a few places where one can find buckets upon buckets of them, but haven't tried them before.  I had been thinking about frying a few up this year if I come across them again....  But now I dunno .  Does what you said apply to them as well?

angryshroom, DethHed, and anybody else interested:

At this time Dr. Weber recommends that we eat no false morels of any kind (false morels being all the Pezizales other than Morchella - Gyromitra, Helvella, Peziza, Verpa, Discina, etc.). She understands very well that many of the species seem to not contain substances which break down to methylhydrazine, but she is currently working with a group of people to redo the classification of all the morels and false morels. While it is possible that some are safe to eat, accurate identification is very difficult. And, within a year or two, many of the species listed in Mushrooms Demystified and other references will no longer be species - they will become synonyms for other species. Many of the species will move to other genera, and many species will be combined or split.

She gave a talk here in Denver just this last October, and that is the source of my information. The recommendation she gave at that time was: stick to the true morels (genus Morchella) and eat no false morels of any kind.

Some of the preliminary results she presented suggest that, especially among Peziza, Discina, Verpa, Helvella, and Gyromitra, there was going to be some pretty significant rearrangement of species.

Anybody who has just gotta eat false morels anyway, please at least follow the recommendations on parboiling (parboil at least twice, 10 minutes each time, and discard the water - also, ensure the area is well ventilated so you aren't poisoned by the methylhydrazine vapors) to minimize exposure to methylhydrazine. Make sure that the mushrooms are thoroughly cooked (that includes the true morels - these guys are all poisonous raw or undercooked). Remember that methyhydrazine as a poison shows basically no symptoms until you have received a pretty hefty dose (near to lethal). So if you imbibe, be cautious, eat sparingly, and avoid eating them on consecutive days. The poison takes a couple days to clear out of your system and you can be poisoned by eating small batches of them over several days. Even following all these precautions it is possible to experience symptoms.

If you show symptoms of methylhydrazine poisoning (abdominal fullness or bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea usually 6 - 12 hours after ingestion (can be as few as 2 hours and as many as 24 hours) - followed in severe cases by liver toxicity 36 - 48 hours after ingestion), seek medical assistance. This is one of the types of mushroom poisoning which can result in death.

And save a specimen or 2 uncooked so that if you do get poisoned an actual specimen can be shown to the medical people and they can get verification on exactly what you ate.

Hope that's helpful.

Why would anyone eat any mushrooms that aren't going to make you trip ? If you are going to risk your life and least go for something to make you fry.

For the taste... I'm POSITIVE it's the elfin saddle, looks exactly as in the first pic and nothing like the second one.

Why would anyone eat any mushrooms that aren't going to make you trip ? If you are going to risk your life and least go for something to make you fry.

Because, if you know what you're doing, there isn't any significant risk. I have been eating wild mushrooms I pick for more that 25 years without ever being poisoned once. The best wild mushrooms are some of the best tasting things you can eat. Some ancient cultures (the Greeks and Romans among them) believed that mushrooms were foods of the gods. Beyond that, mushrooms are nutritious and many are also believed to have medicinal properties.

Your question is comparable to asking why drink something alcoholic unless you're going to get drunk? The almost endless list of fine beers, wines, brandies, whiskies, and other liquors provide plenty of reason to drink without becoming inebriated.

There is a lot more to life than just getting high or stoned.

Saying things like this in the mushroom hunting forum will very likely get you flamed. Most of us in this forum don't care too much at all for getting "fucked up" or "fried." We're into the mycological aspects of mushroom hunting. Sure, it's great to find psilocybian mushrooms, but it's not all that people here care about.

Questions/statements such as this display adolescent ignorance, which is not tolerated by most people. Please consider others' interests when you post.

First of all, most people on here would never eat a shroom unless they were 100% certain of the ID.

Hunting active shrooms is probably the reason most of us inititially came to this forum. But after a while, seeing the wonderful photos and ID of edible and non-edible species becomes a hobby and great learning experience.

I can't wait for the upcoming morel season. I've never hunted them before and according to my guides, they are a delicious delicacy.
