Mycelium5150, I find it helpful to ID any contaminants. Often times people are plagued by one or two specific contams (I used to get Green Mold contamination all the time). When you can ID the contaminant, you can take specific proactive steps to reduce or eliminate that specific contam. After eliminating my green mold, I haven't had any problem with contams..

And MajorJOJO, sorry doesn't look familiar to me. Do you have TMC? I'll try and check it tonight, maybe I'll be able to ID it.. Did the jar smell at all? Are there any noticable excretions (wet spots)?

It had no noticeable smell - and the only liquid around it was standard water condensation on the side of the jar. - I don't have TMC - what is it? Also - I dissected the infected cake, and the black stuff was pretty deep into it (half of the cake)

Apon first viewing, I think it might be the black pin mold.. hold on I'll check TMC.

yeah, looks like mucor (black pin mold) if you look at the picture its got some white mycelium around the black, its all the same.. mucor turns grey then black when sporulating.

To control mucor: air filtration, further sterilization, careful isolation of contaminated substrates.. in other words, just be more careful, good luck :smile:

I would like to add one thing major jojo. This is often a step that is over looked by many(almost all I suspect) whenever you isolate a contaminated substraight container it is a very good idea to pressure sterilize it in your autoclave for an hour prior to exposing it to your environment. The problem is that once you open a live container of contamination you are realesing millions apon millions of its spores that will just turn around and infect other containers. I know that most of you will not take this advice, but I have found that once I did this that my contamination rates decressed significantly.
