Make Your Own Garden Labels / Markers * 2
    #12842956 - 07/03/10 12:27 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I wanted labels for my various plants but didn't want to go spend money on little bits of plastic. A little brainstorming and I decided I would trace one on juice/milk cartons and cut out my own.

Materials:
-White plastic juice/milk carton any size (or similar plastic source)
-Plant label/marker to use as a stencil/reference (optional)
-Fine tipped permanent markers or similar
-Sharp scissors
-Clear mailing tape
-A few minutes

On a one quart carton you can get at least 12 standard size labels traced out with your fine tipped permanent marker. You can make them smaller or bigger, of course, to your needs.

Cut these out with your sharp scissors. Write the latin and common names of a particular plant on the label (or whatever the hell you wanna write), and wrap with clear mailing tape, to prevent the ink from washing away. Cut away any excess tape. Then, you can bend vertically down the middle IF desired.

^ There's my 13 labels from a single 1-quart carton, with the stencil label amongst them. They aren't perfect, but neither are you, and I traced and cut hastily.

Alternative Method from BigL using Plastic Venetian Window Blinds:

I cut them into 5in pieces. Have enough to last me a life time.

Alternative Method from Auxin using Aluminum Cans:

I used to do similar.
Problem is markers fade and plastics (especially white) depolymerize and crumble, no good for perennials. Still good for breeding annuals tho when you gotta label every plant different.
I now cut pop cans into strips and 'write' on them with a sturdy ball point pen on a catalog, it leaves an indentation in the aluminum. Problem is I refuse to drink anything from cans or bottles... visitors that are carrying pop cans are not allowed to crush them
Thats for indoor plants, for outdoors I just make plant maps.

Good post!

I do a similar thing but with empty ice cream containers because the plastic doesn't seem to perish as quick as other ones do. I hate buying gardening supplies and try and recycle and reuse as much as possible to save money and the environment.

I dunno about in AUS but the plant labels in the states tend to be expensive as heck!

Thanks for the positive responses.

Whoa, nice one Big! I've probably seen those blinds in trash piles all over this suburbia. They are perfect, concave and everything:thumbup:

Yeah Big L. I've been told by local cactus growers that venetian blinds are the go for plant labels.

Depends on what ones you buy but yeah they're generally pricey for quality ones. I find homemade ones do just as good a job and they're free!  :jew:

You could put clear tape on top of the writting

Isnt that kinda dangerous though? Like, isnt there the possibility of getting cut with the sharp edges of the can strips?

Markers fade not just by water but by light too, and both destroy clear tape.
True, it is possible to cut yourself on cut up pop can bits. But seriously, how many times would a single person repeat that mistake? I think I've done it once out of about 120 tags I've made.
