Boletus edulis confirmation + other finds of the day!
    #12829605 - 06/30/10 03:57 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I'm hoping this can be confirmed without bruising and/or spore printing. I'm trying to let it grow larger before harvesting it. I have it under a bucket which is pushed into the ground 0.5cm and a rock on top to keep pests out. I've got a bunch of tiny holes punched in the bucket to let air transfer occur.

Enjoy the photos, #4 is a tad sketchy from the wind but I hope its visible.

Habitat:
Growing under a fairly old spruce tree. Ontario, Canada

Gills:
Pores are tiny I can barely see them, but the mushroom is still small I believe

Stem:
Thick stem 3cm at the thickest part already.

1) Boletus edulis?

2) Coral, unknown - mixed woods

3) Cup fungus, unknown - gravel parking lot, near trash dumpster

4) Shelving fungus? Unknown - mixed woods (This one is very special. The fruiting is happening on a broken twig hanging from a dead tree, the broken twig has been fused to the dead tree by mycelium!(was very windy shots are blurry from motion)

Thanks for looking!

That's some crazy reticulation on that stem of edulis!  Nice find.  Keep an eye out for more in that area, sometimes they like to hide under the duff.

How'd the bucket work out?

They don't always look as soggy and wrinkly as in the image you posted!  And you're probably right btw, but ftr I did look at this before concluding that was possible:  http://www.naturephoto-cz.eu/almindelig-judas%C3%B8re-pic-6979.html

Although ive very often seen them on dead trees, there is someone in thailand cultivating them on spent banana tree stems, and ive found them even growing on an old pair of jeans...

How'd the bucket work out?

The bucket worked fairly well. I helped the grow along with daily watering, as the ground was chalk dry when it first pushed up through the duff. The shots I took were on the 30th of June. This is a follow up on the 1st of July:

This one was taken just as I got to work.

This was taken after I got off work around 11:30PM.(camera clock is wrong)

These shots were taken on the 2nd of July:

Just when I got to work.

Photo is a little fuzzy, sorry. Different angle.

I checked it after work, and it had started dropping spores with a vengeance! Also a co-worker and idiot had been looking at it earlier and left the bucket off, so I had to fend off some bugs to get my prize in the fridge. Here are the photos of the harvested Boletus edulis:

Enjoy! I know I will be tomorrow for lunch.
