My "SUPER TERRIUM" plans, SOUND GOOD?

**Ok i have to many terriums to keep track of so i was thinking of putting some time and effort into making 1 big one. Making it cost efficient, easier to maintain, and the ability to put all my attention to just those 1 settings. Instead of 5 or 6.** MY IDEA: My idea is to use plexi glass as the walls floor and top. And to make a wooden frame out of 2x4s into the shape of a rectangle. The dimensions will be 2' deep 8' long 3' wide. I will have a 1.HUMIDIFIER inside the terrium, with eventually an 2.AIR EXCHANGE SYSTEM with filter, a 3.DIGITAL THERMOMETER/HUMIDIFIER and have the outside of the walls and floor of the terrium spray painted with black paint. (so pins will grow more straight). For LIGHTING i will buy 2 48" shop lights with 2 lights side by side total of 4. OTHER NOTES:i would use a cauken gun to make it air tight. **QUESTION** Does anyone have this sort of homemade set up? Do you think this is a good idea? also How would i connect the plexi glass to the wood without the plexi glass cracking? I think screws will crack it.

Find a glue that will work, and seal it with silicon.

I'm not in favor. If the 'big' terrarium gets a contam, you are surely fucked. If you have 2 or 3 bins, you reduce the risk of spreading contamination and increase your chances of sucessful fruitings.. Good luck!

Whats liquid nails? And the other guy: So what your saying is lay the plexi glass on a hard flat surface and drill a hole then just stick it up to the wood stick the screw threw the hole and screw it into the wood?

Ill try the screw thing with a piece of scrap plexi glass, i think i know its just gonna crack. BUT if it doesnt ill use that, but regardless i think im gonna go with that liquid nail stuff or both at the same time if the screws work. IM STILL OPEN TO ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Anyone ever heard of using a whole room as a terrarium. Theres a guy around here (Michigan) who supposodly has a whole room set up with a bunch of casings. The yield is phenomenal from what I hear. Prob wouldnt be too hard to set up either with a little hard work sealing up all the cracks and keeping humidity up there.

Take a drill place a drill bit in it. Place the bit where you want the hole. Dont press hard or you will crack the plexy glass let the drill do the work. And make sure the drill bit isnt smaller than the screw or it will crack.

Well if your just growing for family and friends then you wouldnt need a "super terrarium" either. I do just fine with 1 box.

Get a silicon caulk. It will seal the fuker right up. Its nasty shit so be careful.... one of my best friends is a construction major... he works with the shit.... he said he has gotten it on his hands before.... had to wait till his skin peeled of to get the stuff off so be careful... but it will work. Home depot / builders square type place to get it. good luck with your project.... lemme know how it works. I am hoping to eventually set up a nice system with a humidifier etc.... but right now I am in a college type area with little privacy... so a whole setup might raise some suspicion... I just use perlite for now... might not be optimal but shit.... what are you gunna do, ya know ? I just want a good trip or two

to pre drill holes it would have to be thick material, silicone caulk will hold anything thicker than a Quarter of an inch...and screws in plexi will actualy weaken it....the best to use is a clear epoxy, it fills gaps.....
Plan it out, build a card board mock up, assemble that and you have a foundation for building it without wasting $300 in plastic...trust me I work with glass, plastic, metal, wood and engineered cements.

Ok....1/4 inch thick or thicker would be strong enough, you would need a couple of internal supports, dividers or something, 2 for upper, 2 for lower.
Your limited in length to 6 ft....or paying a ton of cash for larger sheets, Clear 5 minute Epoxy will hold it and fill most smaller gaps, but if the plans and dimentions are drawn up well it should be store cut, that will give you square cuts and edges, clear silicone caulk would seal up the larger stuff....its a bitch regardless..let the store do it...

A closet lined with plastic is so much easier than building a box. Mine is 8x8x3' 1 coolmist inside, HEPA suppling air flow, 1 20w florecent, (I think your light proposal is excessive), coolmist HEPA and light all running for 30 min every 2 hours. I set it all up 2 months ago and no contamination zero.

My closets small but that brings me to an idea of usingi wood as the walls floor and ceiling and just lining the wood with that same plastic. It wont be as durable, But i dont think it has to be, and when im done growing i can throw the plastic away then add more for my next project after that.

That walmart idea is awesome. I found it on the website. I couldnt have designed a area better then that no matter how hard i try. Its got clear plastic ALL around it, all you gotta do is set it on its big side. It even has zippers to open up and spray, pick, etc. Its AWESOME. And its only 30 dollars. If your doing big expeirements with lots of different strains or substrate THIS IS PERFECT. heres the pic IM GETTING THAT and fee thanks man great find

Poo, it probably is the best idea to get that pic off of there. Anyway, the wal-mart greenhouses are very nice and right up your alley. Plexiglass can be expensive especially when your talking about the amount you're gonna need. If you do decide to go with this setup, maybe complete plexiglass construction isn't the answer esp. if you're just gonna spray paint it black. As far as the available amount of sq. ft. goes, you would be better off lining a closet or going with the mini greenhouse. The 4ft. mini greenhouses go for about $50 plus shipping online. They aren't in season for me but they might be for you. You would be paying more $ per square foot going with your design. I admire your innovation and encourage it. Besides, what happens when you do finally get the yeilds you want and decide to shut down? What are you going to do with that terrarium? Maybe if you design it so that it could be disassembled, it would store better. If you do that then you're going to be looking into even more addition costs, but it would rock b/c you could also clean each component rather easily. Think ahead, plan carefully. Good luck with whatever you decide.

DO NOT USE PLEXI YOU WILL BE SORRY ! Plexi glass will warp after about two days exposure to high humidity environment . If you are mind set on building this thing use LEXAN , is aprox twice as costly as plexi , but in the long term scheme of things you will have a much better tank , Personally Id make the stepup from little tanks to one big one , like a 125 gallon fisk tank with a lexan lid , but that is me .
NO PLEXI GLASS................ LEXAN IS THE SMART CHOICE !

A cheap option would be to buy a roll of Vapor Barier ( used in construction to line walls and insulation.. ) and maybe use styrofoam for the bottom and sides, you can cover the syrofoam with plastic and build your walls seperately, silicone it together..
use 1 piece of lexan/plexy.. whatever.. transparent roof for light.
nice, cheap, light, easy to work with,ie: blade knife... and disposable.
hope it helps! my 0.02

I picked to use the walmart closet thing. Now im thinking of what way to heat it and keep it humid. Heres my choices. (not many) 1. 4 fish tank heaters in a cup of water in each corner 2. Put a small slow cooker in there with a alittle bit of water in it. Its my new idea and keeping my terrium at 78. 3. Vicks humidifier set up for 5 minutes every hour ANY OTHER IDEAS

Personally I use the heating system that came with the house . But I'd use space heater(nice one with safties and temp control) with a room humidifier to keep dry air prob to min , then use final humidity control with fave method in the grow chamber itself , come up with air exchange to min co2 levels . Imagination is the mother of invention ! Ben Franklin I think said that !

A FOAF was thinking of doing something similar to this. Now, let's say a) the terrarium would be inside of a closet, and b) he wants to put an air cleaner into the equation. Should the air cleaner be inside the terrarium or inside the closet? Would the high humidity affect the air cleaner in a negative way (i.e. condense on the filter and keep it from working properly or condense in the circuitry and cause it to short)?
I've seen pics of a similar terrarium and the humidifer was seperate from the terrarium and was hooked up with tubing. Seems like it would be easier to just put the humidifer inside the terrarium.

I used to have a really complicated setup. It worked well, but it wasn't worth the hassles. So I have now switched back to just using rubermades.

Plexi will work if you build a frame to support it. Being the frame will prob be made of wood you need to make it a external frame.
If u know anyone in the custom car gig someone might have a heated break and you can basicly bend a solid tank.

A cheap option would be to buy a roll of Vapor Barier ( used in construction to line walls and insulation.. ) and maybe use styrofoam for the bottom and sides, you can cover the syrofoam with plastic and build your walls seperately, silicone it together..
use 1 piece of lexan/plexy.. whatever.. transparent roof for light.
nice, cheap, light, easy to work with,ie: blade knife... and disposable.
hope it helps! my 0.02

Has anyone tried vapor barrier? I'm trying to decide on what I should use for a bulk fruiting chamber as well. Do you guys think that big rubbermaids are the most practical?

yeah then use a nut and washer to fasten it up, seal it with clear silicone on the inside like they do fish tanks, use green treated 2x4 and that fucker will be sturdy as shit, and have the wood on the outside, if you are worried about what f8l said you can divide your super terrarium into 3 or so or whatever sections

damn thats what i get for not reading the entire thread,
anyways im certain wal-mart, menards, lowes, home-depot, or whater has nice plastic shelves that will fit in that closet, and you wont have to order shit off the internet, and it wont be pricey, or you can built a cheap ass shelf out of pvc pipe and lexane, get some like 1/2 inch pvc and a couple bulk bags of 2 inch elbows, and then you will need a hand saw, a drill, and some zip-ties, just build yur frame out of pvc, cut yur lexane to fit about an inch out from the pvc, now drill two holes one either side of the pvc, one hole on the inside of the lexane and out, i sugest adding a zip tie every 5 inches or so, hope that helps a brother out.
EDIT: freakin spelling

I will attest from years of use, that acrylic (plexi) is a nightmare. The only real way to do it right is to solvent all of the seams. They make special needle bottles and solvent for this ... then maybe seal with silicone ... How are you going to cut the acrylic sheet? Unless you have a table saw, you will have to use the precut sheets or find someone to cut it for you. 1/8" is too thin, and anything thicker is *real* pricey ...
Vapor barrier with somewhat of a frame or box sounds interesting. Vapor barrier is used to prevent condensation from forming in the walls of houses. DuPont Tyvec (House Wrap) is actually a industry standard vapor barrier. Still messy and a lot of work (transporting materials, etc.). And remember Murphy's Law -- you won't bang this thing out over some beers and bong hits on a Saturday afternoon.
Even though it is unoriginal and plain jane, I would opt for the huge plastic container. They make Sterlites that could fit a small child inside -- maybe even like 2 or 3 of those morbidly obese ones you see on daytime television Keep all of your environmental controls inside. Make holes with a hair dryer/heat gun and utility knife or tin snips. Total cost is low, and you still have your weekend. I have built alot of crap, and it always will take 3x as long and cost 2x as much as you plan.
Remeber: good, fast, cheap. Pick two ....
BTW pre-drilling refers to making a smaller diameter hole than the shank of the screw. Then, when you drive the screw, just the threads are cutting into the material. Otherwise, the acrylic will snap -- that stuff is so brittle. Not suprisingly, you can buy screws for just about any kind of material -- sheet metal, plastics, mdf, etc.. I had to tap (thread) a hole in an acrylic tube once. I went through $60 of material and a pack of smokes before I got it to work. I was looking for the uber-setup, and settled for the plain jane -- to much time and hassle otherwise. Hope this helps.

Hey fellas. Check out my "whimsical setup." I've been experimenting with a terrarium/fruiting chamber for a few days now, but to no avail. Maybe you can help me out or draw some ideas from it.

man i thought that my terrarium was cool... i got an idea on what do get... believe it or not glass is MUCH cheaper that plastic... the only problem with it is that it is VERY hard to transport safley and sutting it can be a bit tricky, but most stores will cut it for you. I don't really think that price will be a problem seeing how much weight you will get out of that. you can't be eating all those yourself so i would say that it wouldn't be hard to make you money back.. plus glass lasts for about 400 years so you wont have to worry abot it warping... it will take some time to construct but if you do the math b4 hand it shouldn't be that hard..

all i can say about glass is, "oops, I dropped (fill in blank)" or "oops, I slipped and kinda fell over" and CRASH!! your cut the fuck up (we are talking a walk-in sized terrarium here). not busting your chops, just saying I'd be scared shitless of that much glass (i don't trust myself that much, hell, I get scarwigged out just moving my aquariums (for fish not mushies) when I move).
