question reguarding perlite in a shotgun terrarium

Hello....recently I changed a bit of my set up. This change led to a new shotgun terrarium being elevated about 7-8 feet in the air, having 2 florescent lights on the terrarium, and of course some new cakes to go with it. Now these particular plastic containers are shaped differently from the first one I initially used. Because of this the perlite layer I used is at least 5-6 inches. Now, when I initially did this I didn't think it would negatively impact things in any way. However, my cakes haven't started pinning yet and now I'm not sure if I'm being impatient or if maybe the perlite could be causing them to not be getting enough moisture or something. I'm not entirely sure if there is something wrong....I just really wanted more information regarding this procedure.

What are you saying? You have an 8 foot tall tub or terrarium or you have a normal tub sitting just below the ceiling?

What are you trying to accomplish with that? Is the temp near the ceiling closer to the fruiting temps you would like to use or what?

No. I have read that the majority of contams are found near the floor. Realistically though I really just put it there because I bought a gorilla rack from Sam's Club and used to to store 3 terrariums....this one is the highest off the floor. Why do you ask? Could the elevation be somehow detrimental?

I have noticed that the one closer to the ceiling needs to be watered more often...or at least it seems that way....that also may be because they are new cakes though I think.

Its true, it only makes since that there is more contams near the floor, because of the carpet that holds dust, and gravity.
But I think putting them at the ceiling is overkill. If your substrate contams its not going to be because the tub was lower to the floor.

It sounds like your perlite is a little too thick. SGFC work by, to make a long story short, bringing up air from under the FC, through the perlite, raising the rH of it, and repeat. If the perlite is too dense or thick, the airflow is restricted; obviously causing problems.
Also, 90% of contaminants are found 1 foot from the floor. 1-2 feet is good, 7-8 might be extreme
If youre interested in reading how a SGFC really works, click the second link in my sig and Ctrl+F and type FC and hit next until you find the block of info about it. RR has explained the physics of this many times.
