Mycelial Water
    #1280345 - 02/05/03 05:42 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

When my cubs fruit, I'm planning on choosing the most prolific fruiter, cutting a sample mycelium, and growing it in a broth of brown rice and potato starch, honey, and h2o2.

Once the broth is well colonized, I plan on placing shredded, corrugated cardboard into the broth until the moisture is absorbed, agitating to disperse, and then pouring into a tray containing perlite for casing. On top of this mixture, I plan on placing hardwood sawdust. Once the mycelium have colonized the sawdust, I plan on cold shocking to iniatiate pinning and then fruiting the casing.

Has anyone tried a technique similar to this? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

perlite for humidity not casing. cubes wont like sawdust as much as other substrates. your cardboard will have to be sterilized.
i'd read some more teks that are tried and tested. 5 posts, have you grown your first yet?
no offence but i wouldnt bother trying what you are suggesting.

keep the ideas coming!

not enough nutrients to fruit cubes. could be interesting for azures or other wood-lovers

My first and second crops were using the PF method (cakes on perlite). I was less than pleased with fruiting. No problems with contamination, though.

Casing seems to be the way to go, both in terms of quantity of fruits per flush and the number of flushes.

With so many teks out there, what seems to be the best for growing cubs? I love to try new things.

grow it on birdseed (assuming you have a pressure cooker) and case with coco coir. If you don't have a pressure cooker you can still make casings out of your regular PF cakes, but your yields won't be nearly as good as if you had used a whole grain.

You probably want to move on to a grain tek next.

Millet and rye are the two most common. Popcorn works too.

Did you dunk your cakes, or use some other re-hydrating method with your first two?

No, I didn't dunk. I wasn't casing and thought the cakes would disintegrate.

You would probably get better yeild from the cakes if you used the dunk tek, or at least the double ended casing tek (which is a cake tek, not really a casing tek).

Either way, if you have grown twice you're pretty much ready to move on to grains, but you'd need a pressure cooker to do that.

I used incremental sterilization my last batch. Couldn't I also do this with grains/bird seed? For some reason, contamination doesn't seem to be a problem in my home. I do use peroxide, though.

Maybe. A PC would be better, but experimentation is good.

I disagree, I think its a casing tek you do add, a casing layer, it serves the same purpose as casing its just done with a whole cake.

I think that would be too small.

You might be able to fit a pint jar or two in it.

Blade: I was just pointing out that it was more of a cake tek than a casing tek. Most of the cake is still exposed, and the shrooms grow mostly from this exposed surface, and along the edge where the casing meets the cake.
