This may be stupid, but I guess this is the place to ask.
I had a very weird number call my cellphone not long ago; 1888-555-5550.
555 area code??? I thought that was a joke area code>? Has anyone ever heard of a call from a 555 number?!
Sorry for my stupity/ignorance

Those 1888 numbers are usually telemarketers, people trying to sell you shit, or ask you to fill serveys. Usually when you call them back, no one picks up but theres a automachine that asks you to push what ever number to get you off their list.

The area code was not 555, it was 888.

1888 means an 888 area code. 555 was the first part of the actual phone number: 555-5550 with an area code of 888. Totally a telemarketer.

lol ha no shit, got me there
I called the number back after it called and I got a message saying that "the # you dialed does not exist". It just seemed odd, thanks for the responses.

The area code is 888 and the prefix is 555.
Its not odd, anyone can set their callerID to anything they want.
Probably a telemarketer in this case.
I recommend spoofcard.com.
I have had lots of success using it to set my caller ID to someone elses CID who works for a company, then call that companies helpdesk and ask them to change my password. Since the callerID says I am calling from their office phone they just do it no questions asked.

Using a callerID spoofing calling card to change someones password on them without their permission.
