Avoid mirrors
    #1279932 - 02/04/03 10:14 PM (22 years, 4 months ago)

I was tripping with one of my best friend on Sunday. Everything went well, we were in the living room listening to OK Computer (best tripping album for me, I didn't want any track to end), having a great time.

After that we went to my room, talked for a bit, and I went for a long washroom break.

When I came back, I found my buddy staring at the mirror (the big ones used for closet sliding doors). His face then got really intense, which turns to horrified, and suddenly burst out crying. He kept on saying it's so bad, it's the end, and loads of negative things... Seriously, if I wasn't there, I think he would've done some crazy stuff. I felt really bad, I think this trip had some unwanted change in him.. he was still really depressed 2 days after the trip.

I've got to say this... avoid mirror when tripping... most people I know don't like what they see in the mirror when tripping, myself included.

I, on the other hand find mirrors funny as hell, watching my face turn and twist into all sorts of squares and block thingies. It's really not fun to get caught in the mirror, not being able to quit looking, just stuck there. That's probably what happened to your friend.
Be safe.

people constantly are like, "don't this...it's bad"....just because something isn't enjoyable for one person, doesn't mean it's like that for everyone.

Your buddy has some serious self esteem/confidence issues. That's why. Shrooms, lsd and such, are amplifiers.

I myself see horrible and disturbing things, most of the time, when I look into a mirror....but I enjoy it. lol. Takes a lot to throw me over the edge in that regard

I rather enjoy the mirror whilst tripping. I too have some self-seteem issues, mostly in regards to the way I look. I have a fair amount of facial scarring from bad acne and stupid accidents that make me very self concious, I feel like they really stand out when I'm straight, so I tend not to go out much and when I do, I usually find a nice quiet corner of the bar and have a few beers with a good book.

But when I'm tripping and I look in the mirror, my scars dont look like forigen objects embedded into my flesh, the look like part of me (which they are of course) and I feel as though I can see my face a a whole, compleat thing and I actully *like* the way I look, I feel as though I *might* be handsome..

Anyway, thats just me. Everyone trips different.

I usually see bad things when I look in the mirror while tripping but im so caught up in the fact that im actaully seeing something else that I really dont care.

I guess maybe my self esteem has something to do with it... dunno I just like looking at my face morph.

One time i looked at my face in the mirror and I watched my hair receed the whole way and my face turned bumpy and white and black... INSANE!

I've only tripped once but I found looking in the mirror to be fascinating. I felt almost noble and my face became very elf-like and I felt totally at peace with myself.

--------------------
The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

It's usually a little weird for me. I'll watch my face bending and twisting around, and after a bit I'll have had quite enough. Never really freaked me out though.

I absolutely love looking into the mirror while tripping! I could sit there the whole time and just stare into it. As it was mentioned above, what's good for some, may not be good for others. It's all a state of mind. Coincidently, my bathroom is my favorite room to trip in. I can't seem to pull myself away from the mirrors or the design on the floor.

When I look at myself in the mirror tripping, I always seem more "alive" than I usually do. Kind of glowing and full of spirit, like a wild animal that just got set loose from the zoo back into the wild. Ah, I love that stuff!!

Looking into the mirror the first few times while tripping can be scary. I know it was for me - seeing all my pores, every tiny blemish, disgusting looking pimples that don't even exist. But over time I got adjusted to being able to stare at myself in the mirror. Nowadays, I can't go past a mirror while tripping without peering into it, seeing my dinner plate sized pupils, grinning like a goddamned fool and pulling a face at myself. Try staring at your face and go into a trance and watch your face morph into a series of different forms, maybe even entities. Perhaps you could go beyond that and into a realm of consiciousness you've never experienced?! Perhaps.
Anyways, there's nothing to be frightened of, really. Embrace what you see, don't fight it. If your face looks like it's melting off, relax and remember that your face really is solid. Play around with your mind a little! Going a little crazy doesn't hurt.

I don't get that whole "dont look at mirrors while tripping" BS. I almost always end up seeing a mirror when tripping, and i don't find it scary, seeing my reflection is kind of a crazy and cool idea but I always tend to think I look ugly when I'm tripping.

I agree.

Here's a question, sort of unrelated, to anyone......do you think it's necessarily good for the pupils to become SO big(like...they fill up a good portion of my eye...which isn't normal. Would tripping a fair amount, be not good for the pupils?)...lol stupid question...but gotta know

I would have to say that I should avoid mirrors while tripping. I think most people can handle it, but I know exactly what that guys friend went through. I'd been told mirrors were really cool while tripping too, so last time I gave it a try. I got stuck in front of the mirror for an hour. It was not fun. My face looked all morbid and grotesque, and when I stared into my eyes, I started thinking about life. It was as if I saw every aspect of my life from a different point of view. I went over everything that had ever happened to me that had an effect on my life. Then it was if I started to see what it was going to be like in the future. But neither of these psuedo-visions were happy ones. My life seemed horrible. Every part of it just seemed wrong and didn't make sense. The the future seemed to be even worse. Everything was going downhill, fast. I saw myself as a total failure. Someone who couldn't do anything but screw up. I finally managed to break myself away from the mirror. At that point I just tried to go to sleep. But then I got thinking that my blanket was a spider and it was trying to eat me. Yeah, it was pretty much all downhill from there... I guess I just wasn't in a proper mental state to be doing shrooms. I've been really depressed lately. And that didn't help much. I still enjoyed the trip though. Nothing could possibly happen to make me not enjoy it.

maybe you thought that thing about the spider because the blanket maybe made you feel like you were caught in a web?

dunno , but yeah the dialiation of pupils isnt a bad thing, it only lets more light into the inner - eye, which can be a bad thing if near a bright ass light.

If your staring at anything and it doesnt make you squint, your probably ok... unless its an eclipse.

Well it seems to me that your consciousness treated the mirror as the blank canvas; with which it would paint a view of your present condition. The future condition was possibly your rationalising mind reaching a logical conclusion to the situation as it saw it if your thoughts/actions were to continue on the same path.

Psychedelics as tools, and props to induce certain states of mind...who'd have thought

For the record I like mirrors but I always feel I'm being really naughty by staring into one. I stare at this familliar yet alien child like personality who is of course staring back at me. The mirror world always seems to be of more substance than the world I inhabit when I watch. I know I can never really know what it is like, and the person staring back at me knows this too. It's written all over his smug face!

I enjoy looking into mirrors while tripping as well. It's cool to look at your face all distorting and shit. I've also got some of that sense of animalism mentioned in an earlier thread. I particularly enjoy staring into my eyes. This one time I was looking into a mirror (one of those kinds with lights all around it in a square configuration), and my pupils reflected the light from the bulbs in such an awesome way. It was great.

lol one time I looked in a mirror and in my minds eye I saw my dads face and my moms face come together perfectly to form my face, like that sounds stupid I guess but I phsyically saw my moms head and my dads head come together and when they merged it was an exact image of my face, kidna hard to explain but it was cool to see which features came from what I guess..

well was there any truth behind what your mind was telling you?

DO YOU need to fix things in your life? If so, and this experience pointed out faults you'd never noticed, then what's so bad about it?

If it was all lies, lies, and dirty lies, then yeah; stay away from the mirror.

Think about it though, man.... sometime truth can be horrifying

I've had a bad experience looking in the mirror while tripping. I found myself staring into my eyes and I couldn't move. Then looking deep into my eyes there was a sudden "pull back dolly shot" and I saw my entire image standing there as a different person. Then my image made a move at me (the kind of move you make when you want someone to flinch). Well, I flinched. It scared me bad.

Whenever I look into the mirror on psychedelics I see myself all tripped-out, just as my friends look

I smile, think "hehe check THAT guy out - he must be all whacked-out on mushrooms!" wink at myself, and exit the restroom.

I like mirrors while tripping too. I like making funny faces in them while straight, though, so there's that. I was tripping acid for the first time and went and looked in a mirror and couldn't keep a straight face, it was just so ironically funny.

So, yeah, I say only look in mirrors if you've got a good self-esteem and you like looking at your face.

I always get all fascinated at the fact that I can't look into both of my eyes in the mirror.

I'm left-handed, and I've noticed that when I look in the mirror, I look at my left eye. Do you right-handers "default" to the right-eye?

The mirror is not necessarily a "bad" thing. Anytime I have ever had a negative tripping experience it has been related to some negativity in my self-image. If you can't look in a mirror while tripping...your unconscious mind is most likely unhappy with something about your character........or your activities in the recent past. The mirror reflects what you really believe about yourself....as always,

pack carefully because your baggage has a major effect on your trip.

Once when I looked into the mirror tripping by myself I stared at myself so long that I put my point of view into the place of mirror me. THAT IS FUCKING TRYPT.

The last time I looked into the mirror tripping I was on ayahuaska. After being in the dark for most of my peak I turned on the lights, stood there and tripped for a minute, then went to the mirror in the bathroom. It was hard to get ahold of what I was looking at even though I knew it was me. It wasnt too hard to pull myself away though. I think one of these days I'm going to do ayahuaska alone infront of a mirror the whole trip, may help with introspection. Although usually it seems I am just like a deer in the headlights, it's hard to think because you're so astonished.

On my recent ayahuasca trip I looked in the mirror and I was suprised at how normal I looked - I looked very very tired (eyes all puffy like when you wake up from mere 3-4 hours of sleep) but quite normal. The background sure was fucked up though

When I am tripping and I look into mirrors i feel like Donnie Darko in that scene where he breaks through that weird barrier and he seems so lucid, and he gets all streched out. Everything just seems to be so much more real, and vivid. Its weird it can go either way depending how I feel at that instant either great or horrible.

There are freakier things than mirrors when you're tripping... Like stumbling across the same thing posted 5 times in a row and getting trapped in an eternal loop.

I spent many years avoiding the mirror whilst tripping. I had at a few times caught a glimpse of myself and found it quite disturbing. The disturbing thing was that the feelings in my mind were not portrayed in what I saw as a tired, aging and distorted face.

However, sometime last year I decided to challenge my fear and look at my reflection. It was an amazing experience that provided me with a better understanding of myself and other people.

As I looked at my face I suddenly appreciated the important function of the body as well as the mind. I felt a strong connection to my face, knowing that my mind and my body belonged together and had we had been interconnected for my whole life.

It also challenged the way I perceive others, that the mind and body, although connected together, are not representative. I was never really a judgemental person on a persons appearances, I had always taken people as I found them.

However this viewpoint has become a lot stronger. It?s left me feeling more comfortable about who I am (my body is my body and it can not be changed) and who other people are (their appearance is irrelevant, it is the mind inside the body that is important)

Nowadays I love looking at myself in the mirror. I can spend what seems like an eternity just looking into myself, appreciating that my likeness is totally unique and something I should be proud of. It is the physical representative for my conscious being.

I usually catcha glimpse of myself on the way to the bathroom, and i'll stop and stare at myself for at least 5 minutes. I've also stared in mirrors in dreams. I think its all about if your truely happy about who you are.

I think that instead of tripping in front of a mirror, you should try tripping in a place that has a reflecting pool. Like the water basin in Lord Of The Rings.

Mirrors are artificial devices and the reflecting pool may offer the same insights without the "grossness". Lighting also makes a difference. A soft off-white light makes your face much more natural looking than the phony flourescent lighting found in many restrooms/bathrooms.

Also, while you are looking into the reflecting pool, touch the water with your hand and watch what the ripples do to your thoughts.

Peace

I alway like a look in the mirror when tripping, especially if I concentrate and stare into my own eyes. A DMT like buzz usualy starts to overwhelm me and its as if the reflection of the room change into a diffrent place and sometimes the reflection of me changes. Its kinda weird almost looking back into my past lifes or something. Its definitaly worth a try.

Mirrors are kind of creepy for me when I am tripping.

When I was little, I was terrified of mirrors, ESSPECCILLY in the dark, thanks to that bloody mary shit my sister told me. I think thats why they creep me out when I am tripping. It always seems like it is "me versus my reflection"

ahh yes I know what you mean... when you have a medicine cabinet thats like a middle piece and then two outer mirrors that fold out and toward eachother, in front of the middle mirror.

Stick your head in front of the middle mirror and wrap the other two back around you, and you're surrounded by mirrors, with your reflection being coppied in several directions off into infinity - cool shit

Ill  give you all a bit of a secret for those so inclined to try it...

The reason the mirror is so scary for some people is because the mirror is a powerful gateway into another dimension..

Mirros have been used for a very very long time for divination and various mystical purposes...

I have trained myself by gazing into a mirror whilst tripping, whist sober for long periods of time... what I do is this...

I will relax my eyes and try and defocalise so that everything is blurry but i can still see everything.... like the magic eye books... I will also stare at my third eye which is just above and between my regular eyes and the third eye is the portal for our Ability to see into other realities.

I will gaze like this until I see my third eye is opening up...you will notice it turning blue or purple in a big splotch on your forehead.. when this happens its important to be able to blink but continue the gaze like you didn't blink at all.

If you manage to hold the gaze your face will start to morph first it will be subtle but then you will notice you are not looking at your own face at all...your face will start morphing into VERY differnt faces... the longer you gaze the more faces you will see... It is my belief that these faces are the faces of your past lives...

In my practise I have found that once you have succeeded in gazing upon your own reflection you can then take that technique and.. with someone willing... you can use the gazing technique to see the past lives of other people...

You may think im crazy but you try it... Mirror Gazing is very rewarding if you practise... be careful not to freak yourself out... especially by the EVIL TWIN who wants to switch realities with you

but seriously try it out..

This mirror gazing stuff sounds pretty intense. I dont' know if I could ever achieve this state whilst sober.

On mushrooms I could see it happening though...for sure

It really is just about putting yourself into a semi trance like state... if you can mirror gaze you can also use crystal balls... its like just fazing out in front of the mirror and becoming un-aware that you are actually looking but at the same time maintaining a sort or conciousness aaanyway... I ramble on

WHATS WITH THE LACK OF SELF CONTROL EH PEOPLE?

Same here, I have a mirror in my bathroom which for some reason is above the toilet.. whenever im tripping and I see my reflection it seems to be laughing at me, which in-turn puts me into hysterics... Mirrors are the coolest things ever when your tripping although sometimes the person looking back at you can be very frigthening indeed

one time when triping i had a very interesting experience, it was a big mirror
in wich i could see myself entirely. I amazed to discover that i could see my inner
organs and bones...very educational ! i liked it !
To mesq: the technic you are using is pretty similar to mine when i use a crystal
ball ! (see my post on the spiritual philosophy forum) but i think that the crystal
divination is different in the results than the one with the mirror. Divination with a mirror is called catoptromancy and seems to be linked with summoning entities from other ...heu dimensions. It is interesting to note that in one of Casteneda's book, Don Juan shows him a technic to summon a creature using a mirror and water...seems pretty scary to me !

I had a huge post to post here about mirrors reacting with your subconscious mind and your conscious mind, but my computer froze, so I lost it.

Mirrors are what you want it to be, basically for some people, you just see an image, and you walk away. People who tend to analyze things further will use their subconscious mind to try and help analyze yourself in the mirror. Since you can't understand your subconscious mind, it tries to tell your conscious mind by any way possible, through signs, flashes of images, or whatnot. Its like your subconscious mind speaks Chinese, and you speak English. Totally different languages, but your mind gets the message across in these symbols, like a Chinese person would point his fingers at something, or draw an image for the English person to understand. Your subconscious mind, no doubt, has the true feelings you feel about yourself, which is why people with anger problems, or depression don't see that they're suffering right away, and need another person to try and explain it to you. Your sub-mind is simply that other person, and your conscious mind understands it. Mirrors, for people who analyze things, truly tell you what you think of yourself, and how you interpret yourself. The fact that people see "flashbacks of their lives" or "see into the future" is just your mind trying to complete the pieces of your character. Your subconscious mind knows everything about you, and wants to complete the "jigsaw" puzzle of yourself, so it makes up false endings to it, sometimes they're acurate, sometimes they're not.

When most people look into the mirror I dont think they see themselves as others do. I always wanted to know how other people saw me. Last week I took a high dose and got caught up in the mirror. I finally saw myself as others do and after some analysis was quite content and confident with myself. More so than before anyway. I then plummeted into a horrible trip and thought I was going to die. But thats besides the point. To me the mirror is a way to look into yourself and if your up for it, work out the problems you have with yourself.

Exactly!
Every time I've tripped, I've spent at least a good ten minutes mirror gazing and reflecting on life goals..
"So...what're you gonna do? What're you gonna do?"

Worked great, and now I've got a good roadmap of some things I wish to do with my life, thanks in part to this exercise.

The truth about the mirrors is that They rock. I love staring at myself in the mirror, and if you sing / rap while doin it, then it's just that much better. BUT what beats the mirrors some people may ask. Well, I have the answer; Those damn blinking hook lights on cars. I stood and talked to a car for about an hour, just because it was blinking at me.... ... Trips are always good for me. I'm a very happy person about life.

Maybe I'm just wierd, but I love looking in the mirror when I'm tripping. Sometimes it's like I can see my astral body.

The only thing that freakes me out is how big my pupils get when I stare into a mirror. Its just scary how big they look, it looks so unreal. Anyone else feel the same way?

The first few times I tripped I went out of my way to avoid mirrors because I had read plenty of comments saying "dont look in the mirror while tripping!" Then I decided it couldnt really hurt and I did get stuck looking at myself for quite a long time, but it wasnt a negative thing... in fact the only way it was negative was that it was pretty vain - I thought I looked really cool.

I know what you mean. I've looked at my face on shrooms and seen my third eye before.

I've gotten that too, but since shrooms also soften my ego, I'm not so concerned with my self-image, and see the beauty beyond the imperfections.

Staring at one mirror is pretty cool, but tripping between two or three mirrors and seeing an endless reflection is just............ oh my god!

I feel the same way, man. It's like all your insecurities come out & I myself become super critical. It doesn't ruin the trip for me, but my pupils & rainbowing skin freaks me out.

I like to go out into nature when i'm tripping. Rooms and other man-made things just depress me where as trees and other natural things can open my mind up way gnarlier and better.

i like staring into the mirror looking into my eyes. its like i am looking into infinity. you look into the mirror and it looks back at you, who are you to say that the mirror isnt the entity and you are just the reflection. its like pointing a videocamera thats on and connected to the tv aimed directly at teh tv so that it gets that relatively infinite loop back of the screens.

A mirror is a negitive space with a frame
A place for your face it reveals
What the rest of us see it conceals
What you'd like it to be......

Mirrors are the basis of beauty give rise
to self-love or self-pity the prize
if a women is pretty she tries
like a superstar hollywood girl

When I was younger and more insecure(pimples etc) a mirror seemed like a bad idea..........but these days I am much more confident, and looking in a mirror on shrooms has gone froma negative, to a positive experience.

Its REALLY DOES depend on the person.

If you are insecure about your apperance , a mirror can be a problem, years later you might walk by the same mirror......and this time if anything the shrooms are making you feel MORE confident. (at least thats what I notice on a small dose.........with larger dosss I start becoming other people and such

Well, I have never sat and stared into a mirror for a length of time while tripping, but if I pass a mirror, I smile at myself, and sometimes wave...!  I do know that my pupils get HUGE, and there always seems to be a smile on my face...!

When I'm good tripping, I love to look in the mirror, cause my pupils go nuts, and my skin is all golden like. And sometimes, when I'm tripping harder, I see different faces of me, and I end up talking to myself.

I have seen some weird ass shit looking through a mirror!
Mostly while robo-trippin..clocks melting, Christmas trees dancing while melting, clothes on the floor slithering around like snakes & fusing with other clothes to morph into an upright walking creature!
Was fun really!
Allot of people say they don't have hallucinations on dxm but i did!!!
