Alright, well here I go again, probablly asking annoying questions to you all, if I am a bother, sorry. Anyways, I was readin about these"specially enhanced bulk growing substrates" "for growing "exotic" mushrooms". Well these substrate included Wheat straw, horse/cow Maure, and other extra nutrients. It is supposibly the best thing you can grow mushrooms on... It better be at damn 84$ for fuckin a 52 pound bag... ANyways, how does go about making his own compost... I mean you just have to mix the stuff soghether, and let it sit outside, or what? And if where one to make his own compost, what would be some extra "nutritional" ingrdients that one could add? Thanks in advance.

I have never made compost myself. But there is a whole chapter on it in the book "The Mushroom Cultivator by Paul Stamets and J.S. Chilton", You can order it on the shroomery bookstore.
I hope that helps.

TMC's section on composting is a good resource for introducing you to the fundamentals of composting, while at the same time giving step by step instructions on the proceedures that can be carried out with out any further understanding of the process. i recomend it.

pop down the garden center and by a bag of composted horse manure it will be a lot less than $84 and straw is pretty easy to come across.

I have been told that store bought manure isn't worth shit. Why pay for it anyway? Farmers and Equine people are usualy more then happy to give it away.
I'm nobody.

...i havent checked out any of the links that people have suggested, but im sure theyre all legitimate... when i used to make compost back home, i just had a big pile behind the barn that id throw all my organic waste (carrot peelings, rotten veg, eggshells, you get the idea...), rotten wood, etcetera..., nothing like grease or fat or bones (tho ive heard tell that its okay) and through the seasons, using a pitchfork, turning it with the earth underneath to make some really fantastic compost, throwing in crumbled oystershells for good measure, and covering it with straw when winter came around... and when i left where i used to live, it was a twentyyear old pile of simply amazing earth about 4feet tall and a diameter of about 6feet... used it primarily for our gardens, as it was so rich with nutrients... but i have no experience using it as substrate materiel... this said, i think ill check out everyone elses links............ dont buy shit at a store, though, find a farm and support local agriculture, it should be a lot cheaper, if not free....

>what is dried poultry waste chicken shit
> and Urea? One of the chief waste products of the body. When the body breaks down food, it uses what it needs and throws the rest away as waste. The kidneys flush the waste fromthe body in the form of urea, which is in the urine.

Just like to add 1 thing. NO COMPOST IS THE SAME. Mushroom compost is made up to support the growth of mushrooms and hinders other things. Its much more complicated than that but im not gunna get into the whole thing since there are so many other people who have and can do a much better job than me.

This is not the kind of compost we speak here about. We want a specially formulated compost for growth of mushrooms, the main ingredient of this mushroom compost is straw.

Now surley that depends on a lot of things. The stuff i buy is pretty dam good its composted horsemanure and straw blended togerther and composted cost ?4.50 for 75 liters is pretty clean due to the heats reached while composting.100% organic and sold inner city were horse shit can be hard to find.
Still all depends on your own local selection i suppose,if your shop sells shit shit then get out with a bucket. If you shop sells good shit buy it and save yourself a bit of time.

Could you sub. horse poo for the Chix shit in the compost mix? I just called the local zoo 'bout getting some rino or geraffi poo...no dice. My second call was to a horse stable up the road. I was told that if I brought a rubbermaid over I could come back in a week and it would be filled I know this sounds stupid, but that made me really happy. I want to try poo solo, but really like working w/ straw. A combo would be way kewl. So, can I sub. horse for chix poo, and can I add like double the amount of shit? Also, what's involved w/ drying poo? Is it gona stink up my place? Have no place outside to put it and if I did it would proly freeze
