Enviromental Stressing.Does it help or hurt?
    #1278845 - 02/04/03 05:10 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I know that some plants repsond well to certain types of stress...and I know that mushrooms aren't plants but I wondered if anyone has ever done any research into seeing if there are any types of stress which may infact benifit either the size or potency (of both) of mushrooms.

Yes, it's known that cold shocking helps to induce pinning in certain species.

and over watering produces bigger mushrooms but you argued earlyer that only bad dealers would do that  so unsure why your asking if thats your view point.
Also a lack of food source will produce fruits quicker. So it seems you can shock using temp, water and nutrients.Depending on what your motivation is.

Intuitively i think that stresses would be of more detriment than benefit.

The mushrooms are (usually) the sexual stage of the fungus. In nature these fruit, then die and rot within a relatively (in comparison to plants) short period of time. The reason plants have so many secondary metabolites and the reason they are produced is due to predation by herbivorous animals or to ward off bacterial, fungal or viral pathogens. Secondary metabolites make the host (hopefully) less hospitable to pathogens. As opposed to mushrooms (the fruiting bodies, not the thallus), many plants persist many years and the production of secondary metabs is vital to their survival.

Of course I could be completely wrong and fungi could react well to stresses.

there has been some speculation that slightly lower then optimal temps. could produce higher potency (not proven) but it is known, that stressful conditions result in, slower growth, smaller size, and lower yields .
so, what would you gain ?
