Why are my Mushrooms so skinny??
    #1274797 - 02/03/03 02:01 PM (21 years, 1 month ago)

My first flush of B+ on a straight verm casing are growing, which is a great sign. However, they seem to be VERY skinny...some are over 3 inches tall but most have the diameter of the ink cartridge inside a bic pen. Do they fill out when they're full grown?

Nope. They are supposed to come out and get big as they go up.

Are all of your conditions right? Strain? Specs.

That has happened to me before. I think sometimes it is just the genetics.

The strain is B+
8 hours indirect light per day
Humidity is around 85-90%
Temps around 75-80 (fluctuates through day)

I bought them from a vendor with somewhat of a reputation of sellings spores that aren't exactly "pick of the litter"...maybe this has something to do with it?

That is most likely your problem.

If they are growing I would stop giving them light.

Though many say that mushrooms grow towards light and light from all sides produce fat asses. So if this were true you can give light from the side and they will magically grow wider.

This isn't true in my experience, but it's worth a try.

I find it untrue as welland dont beleive it. But many people are 'absolutely positive' that it is true.

My mushrooms get all of their light from the sides and they always grow straight up. Never towards the light and I don't get too many fatasses.

It could be due to a lack of water content. I have seen cakes that have been overwatered and as a result, produce fat ass shrooms that seem about to burst. On the other side of the spectrum, cakes that were very dry produced small skinny shrooms.

Those cakes must have been saturated with water after full colonization. I have found that spores have a hard time germenating in substrate that is too wet.

I have seen this question a few times. Most people either say that the cake is really dry and needs to be dunked or that they are not being fanned enough. In my own experience, I would go with the cake needs to be dunked. Look around for old messages on this topic.

Like alot of ppl say, dunk and give more air exchange. This is what I did resulting in bigger, fuller mushes.

yea, id agree that its air exchange. I had a batch that had no exchange whatsoever in which the stems were very thin.

On another note, I dont think its too important from which direction the light comes. When I had a light shining through the sides and a dark top back in the day the shrooms used to grow up. Now they seem to grow more or less in random directions. HMMMMMMM

I'm starting to wonder if this whole light thing isn't even really necessary for fruiting. It seems to me that mushrooms are unresponsive to incandescent light, in any case, and I have heard of many people have mushrooms born invitro/during incubation.. where (I assume) there probably isn't much light at all, if any.

What I did notice was that my mushrooms grew towards the first amount of indirect sunlight they got. They also refused to pin until exposed to this light for an entire week, and pinned merely one day after being exposed to sunlight. My white christmas lighting has done seemingly nothing to influence the direction/speed/timing of the fruiting phase.

I should note though that I don't have very much experience at all with growing mushrooms, and that all of my observations might just be chalked down to coincedence..

i only give like 20 minutes of indirect light a day and mine seem to be pinning fine, but growing all over the place.

Lots of factors can effect the size of the stems. Genetic, quantity of pin set and maturing fruits, environment including substrate. If the strain is B+ then it is probably your environmnet. The size of the stems you are talking about sound REALLY small for any cubensis, and definetly rediculously small for a B+.
