Should a myco-bag be broken up before inoculating?
    #1278409 - 02/04/03 01:21 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I have 2 myco bags that i inoculated on 1/24 and they haven't shown any sign of mycelium yet. I hear of people breaking up the subsrate before they inoculate. I didn't do this but I am wondering if I should do this now to create a better environment for the mycelium. The substrate is pretty compressed. I got it from sporeworks and nowhere do they don't talk about breaking it up.

Shake it once it is about 25% colonized.

Great Thanks...I know you say shake it up but this stuff is like a solid brick. Should I squeez it to break it up. If I just shake the bag this block will never break up.

Smash it all up then innoculate. Then keep doing this once its at 25% 50% 75% and so on

"Smash it all up then innoculate" I already inoculated them on 1/24. Should I mix it up now or wait until it is about 25% covered?

hey man.. let me explain it to ya since everyone else is being kind of vague..

i didnt mix mine first, dont see anything wrong with that. in FACT-- i come to believe that mixing really ISNT necessary at all.. just helps to speed up colonization.. so i've heard various reports as to good times to mix it up (if your gonna).. 25%, 50%, 40%... i would say 40-50% would be good.. since it would definetly have some healthy growth at that point.

so.. as you said sporeworks doesnt even mention it.. but apparently it works. why not try-- i will most likely. Also, i agree that theyre pretty damn solid.. so breakin up is gonna be kind of hard heh.

that cool? keep in mind im a dumbass and have never grown before.

Yeh, break them up once they're around 50% colonized. Everytime I do this, its hard as rock so I just break them into smaller pieces and so on. Try and shake it so that lots of the smaller pieces of mycelium fall into the bottom of the bag. This way, all the uncolonized spawn in the bottom will colonize faster with the small parts of mycelium. Good luck.
