Casing for dummies, problems??
    #1278306 - 02/04/03 02:57 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

So I did the casing for dummies from http://www.mycotopia.net/ and it has been 7 days now and nothing seams to be growing through the vermiculite. The casing has been in my incubator the whole time in a tupperware container wraped with electrical tape just like in the tek. Tonight i pulled back some of the vermiculite and it appears that nothing is happening. what should I do????

Your top casing layer may be too big. Did you moisten the verm?

Okay yes I did moisten the vermiculite also if the layer is to big what do I do about that just scrap some off??? How much should the top layer be? Like I said it has been in the incubator for 7 days and nothing is happening. I pulled back some of the vermiculite and it does not seem like the cakes are attemting to grow through at all.
Help me please

by digging in the verm, IF there was anything there, you just fucked it up man!

Leave it be.

As long as it's not contaminated or funky smelling,, leave it alone,,

after 1 month of nothing, then start to worry.

Smoke a joint and relax a bit!

The top layer should be 1/4 as high as your mcyelial layer. I just put enough on to cover the mcyelium.

Nicely put. Mycelium often grows according to many things (humidity, temp, co2 levels, aeration, h20 content) so relax and let it do its thing. If you don't see any popping up after about 3 weeks, then worry that your casing layer was too thick. I tend to see mycelium pop up after about a week incubating it at 80F in total darkness.

I usually see it poking through in about 24 hours.

i agree, i usually see it poking through in 24 hrs and in 48 hrs it's perfect for fruiting. i use a thin layer of vermiculite though.. just enough to cover the mycelium. just wait a while longer dude, maybe your conditions aren't optimal.

What kind of air exchange do you have in there. I didnt put any holes in my first tupperware container and nothing happened. I put some nice holes in there and shit was going off.

switch it to the fruiting chamber and wait 3 to 5 days and give it lots of light  :wink:and youll see pins if your casing layer isnt to deep

We already did the "hardest" part of the process. The rest is actually packed with fun and excitement as it is just waiting for the mushrooms to be picked. Also, since there is so much excitement involved, many newbies get desperate and lose their patience, something that can cost them their hard work. This is because they get anxious and start playing around, misting, fanning, poking, dunking, recasing, and just messing things which were nicely done the first time. That is the biggest cause of casings failing and getting contaminated.

Read that. Maybe that's your problem
