any good ideas for cheap terrariums
so far im thinking of using a small plastic box and heres my plan-
cut colonized cakes in half, then put a layer of foil on the bottom with a 2 strips of vermiculite on the bottom, then arranging the half cakes in 2 rows on top the verm, and using a sponge or wet paper towel for humidity
i also got a gallon plastic milk carton i was thinking of of putting a cake in, and also a plastic smootie bottle that i could throw a cake in

or a styrofoam cooler with a piece of saran wrap tacked at a 45 degrees down angle... or even cheaper cut a 2 liter coke bottle so that the mid section is removed and it stands about 6 inches high.. the just put the tow parts together...only prob with that one is you have to air exchange like 9 times a day

I have used 2 liter pop bottles. They work great!
I have also used the plastic bottom of a large butter container. Then used a clear plastic container for a Dome. The Dome was made from a clear plastic candy container from Costco. Put some wet perlite in the bottom and put the cake in....fan and mist several times a day. These work great! I had these all over my house! lolzz

go to a pet store with fish
they get shipments in all the time in styrofoam coolers, perfect size for growing. I've used them to case with too. Works great, and its free.

2L pop bottle works good with a hole on the side with polyfill!!
wet verm on bottom, cake on top, more wet verm on top of cake, and hole on side of bottle with polyfill, * 1/2 inch hole stuffed tight should do it!

youd be surprised how many perfectly rounded dome things you can find at the young kids section at wall-mart, first thing that comes to my mind it one of those lawn-mower like things for todlers that make the lil ball go pop when you roll the wheels, super wal-mart has every last thing you need to grow shroom cept spores

ten gallon fish tank last forever, afraid not, something made of glass will never last forever, but a plastic rubbermaid will.

A cardboard box and a garbage bag.
I've seen this done, with great results.

If you are clumsy bafoon type , no glass is not best choice . But for you non sharp plastics are my reccomendation pslut ! Will last forever if you take care of it , like a charished infant ! My fave for the cheapies though is the soda bottle , have done so during experiment , works very well , takes a bit of patience to make cut right so lid stays up .

for the 2-liter bottles , ive found that the coca-cola brand bottles are the eisiest to work with. trust me they are different at the place you have to cut, they are so much eisier, ive fucked up numerous other brand bottles, but not one single coca-cola bottle.

Coke yuck ! DR PEPPER or die in this house . I was just new to cutting pop bottles , I stick with fish tanks for now . Those little huts chicken come in at the store , you know the ones when they pre cook chicken for you . They make good cheapos , not much yeild due to shallowness , but they work good . Gave several away this past Christmas to friends as take home grow your own kits . I found just casing some jars of grain worked best , composted ones were to slow to colonize , probably due to temp variations . One friend got enough from his that he wants to wait several months before enjoying the fruits of the gods for awhile .
There is a picture of what I'm talking about ......."chicken huts" .

ok technically not a terranium i guess, but you could always go invitro-- fruit them inside the jars they were colonized in. kind of messy or so i hear, when harvesting.

I haven't seen anyone mention my personal favorite yet: Sterilite bins! Wal-Mart sells a 73qt Sterilite for something like $3.50. Cut a hole in the top and glue a $2 piece of plexiglas over it, then wet a $3 bag of perlite and dump it into the bottom. Works great for cakes or casings!
Total cost: $8.50 ($9.00 if you want to cut a hole in the side and glue on a filter disc!)

Those clear vinyl bags that pillows and comforters come in, with some drinking glasses or pvc to hold it up.
