How much do ISP's monitor their customer's web traffic???
    #12777557 - 06/21/10 07:38 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I've always wondered about this...
Do they just look at abnormally high bandwidth usage, or do they randomly check everything?
I know they have the ability to do so, but I'd imagine they'd have to sort through a TON of information...

Has anyone worked for an ISP, or know how they operate on the inside?

What are my options, besides using a proxy? Is that basically it?

I think that would depend on your ISP, but if you are doing anything sketchy I would assume someone is watching.

http://www.torproject.org/ is a good place to start if you want anonymous surfing. There are other options aswell, just make sure your data leaves encrypted.

I've worked for a couple ISP's, and generally speaking they don't watch what you do...but the technology is in place incase they wanted to. Some ISP's will work with law enforcement if they ask, some require a warrant. As far as data usage, it's fairly common for them to monitor these things. If you are constantly downloading/uploading movies you might draw attention.

It's never a bad idea to encrypt your data though, its not just the ISP you need to worry about. You never know who is snooping on your wifi, or router. It's pretty trivial these days to intercept some peoples internet traffic.
