thanks elprawn for the reply, i found them in cow poo in a pasture field while i was fencing. they have a hard stem, light brownish gills, a brown spore print with a touch of purple and smells like a normal field mushroom with a bit of a sweet hint to it. looks like the real deal to me but its just the skirt that makes me question it... if thats any more help to try id them i would be very greatful. cheers, james

Try pinching or slightly cutting the stem a tad to see if it bruises blue. I can't see any blue in the pics, and I'm not sure if they are cubes or not.
Although it is the absolute wrong time of the year for them, I actually found a few the other day (SE QLD) but I doubt they would be growing much further south this time of the year. The blue bruising should confirm it though.

If they don't blue then they're probably an inactive Stropharia species. Take photos of what you believe to be bluing if you want an experienced opinion.

That blue looks unnatural... are you sure it's a result of bruising and not something you've done yourself?

Almost all magic mushrooms will bruise blue (weaker species don't) - that includes cubes. But some non-psychoactive mushrooms will also bruise blue - which includes poisonous mushrooms. No blue bruising poisonous mushrooms look like cubes as far as I know though.
My basic check-list to make sure I have a cube: Brown-gold-yellow cap Bruises blue Looks generally like a cube Grows where a cube should Has a veil (skirt) - although it isn't always there as with yours ^
I don't spore print mine as I can gather ungodly amounts at some times and it's just not easy with that many. Cubes will grow on dung in warmer areas, Subs will grow on rotting wood in colder areas.
At this point, if your mushrooms are bruising a noticeable blue where damaged I can pretty much confirm that they are cubes
Edit:
When taking pics, it is better to have a photo taken from a bit further away that is in focus than a close out of focus one.

Gill colour changes a lot with age. I've seen cubes with the gills the same colour as the stem and some with almost black gills. But yeah, those older ones have light gills as well which is odd

Did you really just color the stem blue?

That's exactly what I said. It looks like he's coloured it with biro in order to try and defy the people helping him ID it.

Simple - he thinks that his species ticks all the other boxes other than the bluing. He's convinced that these are cubensis and that he's just unlucky that his ones aren't bluing, so he's giving us identifiers a helping hand. I wouldn't be surprised if he says he ate them and tripped just so can delude himself into thinking he's found some.

Yeah I agree... never seen such bright blue bruising like that, particularly suss seeing that the original photo shows no sign of bluing on any of the specimens - so... could be biro (but why lol)
They just don't look like Cubensis / active to me. If we knew his location in Aus it would be helpful too - Pretty sure Cube season is just about over anyway (if not finished now) for 90% of areas in Northern NSW/QLD.

The bluing is the wrong shade and it's too uniform as well. Guess he never had any azure pencils.
