In theory - (electronics)
    #12704597 - 06/07/10 05:35 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

OK, so I have a portable hard drive with a power brick that puts out 12V and 1000mA.    In theory I should be able to just chop off the brick and hard-wire it straight into my cars power since it's 12V right?    If I understand correctly, as long as the car can provide 1000mA it will only take what it needs, and not blow the thing up....  But I figured I better verify before I nuke something

Sure, I guess. Unless it needs more voltages.

Automotive charging systems are not as regulated as PC power supplies. As a result I'm not sure. As well I believe hard-drives need both a 5 volt and a 12 volt source.

See what your voltmeter says.
I think the 12v line is for runnig motors and such, and so doesn't need extreme regulation.

You guys are lunatics.    Everything in a car runs on 12v

Radio, lights, seat heaters, trunk latch etc etc.

I just looked it up.

12v - hard drive motor
5v - hard drive electronics

It needs both.

as an aside..... SATA drives also use a 3.3 volt supply

I meant within the drive.
The car stuff doesn't care if it's getting 11v or 16v.

The drive might not last too long.  Voltage output varies a lot in a car, 10-18V.  That power brick supplies much cleaner power.  In general, the dirtier the power supply, the shorter the electronics lifespan.  I'll be interested to hear how it fairs.

yea, It will work for a while but will die.

It should be fairly obvious what happening as when you get in your car and turn on the your headlights they arent very bright but as soon as you turn on your engine they brighten up consideribly.

Adding a decent capacitance between your vcc and gnd will help reduce the power swings, but won't stop it completely.  Best bet would be to go to digikey or some other electronic provider, buy a small fixed voltage regulator rated at more current than you need and in conjunction with a capacitor between the voltage and ground you will have a dramatically more stable power supply...

For a fully enclosed gh with a coolmist piped in, one may find that adding one of these to the opposite end as the intake will seriously help reduce pressure buildup and strain on the poor weak coolmist motor, while also dramatically improving fae without cutting polyfill stuffed slits all over the damn thing.  (That looks suspicious :smirk:)

The drive is an old POS anyway, so I'm not all that worried about it.  I'll let you know when/if it dies

Adding a capacitor will help with power swings, but will not help regulate the voltage.  (Power is a function of current and voltage.)

A better solution would be a buck/boost DC/DC converter since the voltage in a car battery can swing fairly widely (+ or - 4V) from the 12V nominal.

Yeah I was eyeballing one of those DC/DC converters for my laptop.  It takes 15v so I would need to up it a bit from the car power.

>  It takes 15v

That is why you need a buck/boost DC/DC converter centered at 12V.  Buck lowers the voltage down from something higher and boost raises the voltage up from something lower.  A buck/boost does both.  Depending upon the design and load, efficiency can vary widely... anything from 95% down to horrid.
