Drying up a casing surface???
    #1272626 - 02/03/03 02:42 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

Hello All.

I have a straw casing that has started to pin, been in the chamber for about 1.5 weeks now, pins are forming around the edge of the casing rather than the middle..

Now the middle of the casing has lots of tiny water droplets all over it and pins are not forming there at all...

Can i dry up these droplets without causing any contams?? they are not drying up on their own....

what can i do??? HELPPPPPPPPPP

yeah,, i was thinking about it.. but sheesh, i'm afraid that i'll infect it with the paper towel!! or damage the surface!!!

any special precautions?

i'd remove a few layers from the roll for sure, Hmmmm.. sounds risky!

any detailed advice???

I wouldn't worry about it. I do stuff like that all the time and i never get contams in casings.

i was considering removing it from the chamber and covering it with a big plastic bag in the hopes that it would dry up a bit, but i don't want to dry up the casing itself!!!

so.. i'm not sure!!

Stop watering , fan a few more times a day , shut down humidity system for a few hours , use a streilized eye dropper , lots of ways too dry up and not touch surface with foreign objects , thus adding to risk of harming myc .

Good luck !

i'm not watering at all.

Humidifyer runs 1 hr, off 3 hrs. (* my current timer works in 1 hr increments.. )

Using a shelve unit, with double layer plastic, first layer cut from top right to bottom right, and from bottom right to bottom left. 2nd layer cut from top left to bottom left and from bottom left to bottom right in an L pattern.

And i duck taped the charcoal filter from my vicks cool mist to the top of the shleve to alow air to flow out..

my cool mist is on the bottom shelve by itself blowing against the plastic and an open bottom dripping into a tray!! so air flow should be ok!!!??? or so i thought!!!

thanks for the tips.. i'll see what i can do!

a dropper would take WAYYYY too much time, i can't imagine sucking up 1000's of water dropplets from the surface!!

If you already have pins forming, then it should be strong enough to fight off contams. I would just take a paper towel and lightly brush the water. I think you are really paranoid.

Paranoid!!!

YES I AM!!!!! for good reason..  :frown:

I've had a few casings go bad on me so far!!! and my lastest one was doing so good!!!! i almost cried!

I had a really nice flush and after a picking of a good flush, it turned green on me and has to be thrown away...    :frown: :frown: :frown: :frown:

So, i'm being extra cautious!! maybe too much

A good, sterile idea would be to get a newspaper and use an inside page. They are sterilized from the heat of the press that they pass through.

One thing I have tried is using descesent, like damp rid.
What I do is take the casing and put it in a larger tub, like a rubbermaid or whatever. (With an air-tight lid) And then I get a smaller tub that will fit inside with the casing (No lid) and put a healthy pile of damp rid in it. Then I put the lid on the big tub tightly and let it sit for a day or so, in a warm place.

The water will evaporate and be absorbed by the damp rid. Keep an eye on it so you dont dry it out too much.

I would be more concerned about the extra water causing contams then I would be about a paper towel causing them! Dab that shit up and air it out.

Raise temp by one or two degrees , this keeps moisture in the air instead of allowing it to condense . Try the paper towel method if do not like eye dropper idea , it is quicker than it sounds . No matter what you need to play with humidity levels . If as wet as you say , you can reduce run time of humidifier , or the outout of the humidifier itself , fan a few more times a day .

I dont know if anyone mentioned this, but, use some toliet paper. Just lay some flat on your casing, and let it sit for a few minutes. It will soak up quite a bit without damaging pins.

I used to do this a lot.

Ahhhh... i like that!!

THANKS!!

I was afraid of using paper towel, since i get mine in industrial size and it has been laying around a while with the ends touching everything in open air..

TP i can take a new roll, remove a few layers and let it sit on the casing t'il it's good to go...

Again.. THANKS MAN!!!! you rick!

such a simple solution to a simple problem.. fuck i smoke too much..
