Wet Spot; Sour Rot - Bacillus sp. - On Flour ?
    #1276338 - 02/04/03 04:28 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Well a couple of my jars are looking very like the picture in the FAQ, but theyre rye flour, verm mix. I thought it was just very wet verm, but after looking at the pic im starting to think otherwise. In the FAQ is just talks about the contam on grain.

Can you get Bacillus on non grain things?

I think I will hang onto the jars till I can get a photo, what will be tommorw and let some else's trained eye take a look.

It could be only a wet spot, you should be concerned if it grows in size, watch it.

You can get bacillus on any nutritive medium, means any substrate, be it grain, BRF+verm, etc...
Post that pic ....

Not looking good man. They're probably contaminated.
How's the mycelium evolving ?
BTW, you don't show a pic like the last one to a hungry man like me , i'm leaving for dinner !

The past 5 times Ive tried to inoculate BRF, the jars just sat there looking wet. Thought we had too much moisture content, but it turns out its a bacterial infection. I had no clue what was going wrong, so we changed the water ratio and saw some improvements. If this is happening to you where normally you've been successful, try getting back to the simple basics and make sure everything you're using is clean and pure. We boiled the jars and rings,(not rubber lined lids) for 90mins and after used a water&bleach solution for 20mins. Make sure sterility is not compromised or you'll be wasting time, materials, and effort. Bacillus can survive prolonged periods of heat, so the boiling as well as the bleach should take care of it. There are many people on this site that had luck in the beginning, but bottomed out in the end, and we think this should cover it. Pay attention to the details, friends, and you'll do alright!  Happy mushin!
