This is all very possible. I'm sure that in our lifetimes we'll see our grandchildren playing the latest computer game simulations where they can create a world and nurture everything in it, kinda like a blend of Sim City and Black & White only a lot deeper. These simulations are not gonna stop being developed; in time it will be possible to emulate consciousness, and this will be integrated into these simulations.
Some of you raised the point that we'll never know. Do you think that our quest for answers regarding our being is all in vain? Do you really believe that we'll get a sniff of the answer during our lifetime? I hope so! Even if we don't, will we be enlightened after we die?
I'm convinced that we'll experience a sort of "spiritual renaissance" in our future, just when? I don't know!

definately. without and understanding of the basis you have no direction, without direction you can not act in control of your action, without control of action you unwanted chaos may arise and or you become lazy. when your lazy and you let shit hit the fan well thats what it does, and then you have to ask yourself do you really want to let the shit hit the fan. or do you not question then at the end of your life do you look back and think FUCK. does it happen anyway?

I like the title of your post.
I laughed out loud when I read this, "So what shall we do? Bostrom thinks we should keep calm and act normally;"
I don't usually laugh out loud at my computer either.
I agree with the concept presented here.
I am Holoman.
I'd also like to add the crazy delusion that we are constantly being prepared and queued for the next level in our SIM game. The movies we see that press our threshold of understanding/imagination are priming us for the future to come.

Why create a virtual world where pain can exist, surely when u r able to simulate all life, wouldnt you be able to leave out pain, war etc?

Well that wouldn't be a simulation - thats only a part-simulation. The whole point of creating a simulation is that its as close to the real world as possible.

then what would be the ultimate goal of simulating life (except for immortality)? Considering it's not for having a good time (you dont need pain for that, so you might as well leave it out, right?)

ye, saw that one coming , but this would mean that the creators of the 'matrix' didnt know the answer to that question as well, hence my reference to the ultimate goal of SIMULATING life... so not the goal of living (which i btw dont believe in) but the goal that the creators had in mind when thinking of simulating life.

These individuals will also be able to gain their joy in less parasitic ways (without having to see another individual suffer from a lack of it) and thus still rendering pain useless

I am reminded of the people who like to see their Sims go swimming then remove the ladder. Also 90% of the people that play Civilization like to win by force. Let's not even start on the Sim City disaster buttons! I can only hope that our operator(s) is(are) not as cold as we seem to be.
But then again what does it matter because we are not real and they are.
