I've never heard of such a thing, do they have any merit in the medical community?

There are a large number of mushrooms which are being researched for potential medical use. Most of the research is going on in easter Asia.

Here are a few species which are being researched for anticancer activity:

Ganoderma applanatum
Trametes versicolor
Piptoporus betulinus
Boletus edulis
Lentius edodes
Flammulina velutipes
Pleurotus ostreatus
Pholiota nameko
Auricularia auricula
Tricholoma matsutake

There are plenty of other areas of research, including antimicrobial and antiviral activity.

As yet, I am unaware of any of them being accepted medically by the western medical community. They are still researching them.

From that list i can vouch that
Flammulina velutipes
Pleurotus ostreatus
Auricularia auricula
Seem to be stoping my herpies :smile: from reacuring and are supposed to
help against hepatitus and other infections by boosting the bodys
imune system(but arent helping with my spelling :tongue: )

I read somewhere that about 50% of all higher mushroom species examined had antibiotic properties and about 75% of all polypores.
