I love New Zealand! * 1
    #12753448 - 06/16/10 04:19 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

My 5 months is drawing to a close here, and I just got back from my last trip out into the backcountry, figured I'd share some pictures. Not my last ever in NZ -- I'm definitely coming back!

This trip was sublime. Perfect weather. Magnetic scenery. And -- HOT POOLS! This was the first time I'd been in the mountains since the cold season really began, and the snow-capped peaks are just that much more majestic. These pictures don't even do this place justice. This is west coast, South Island.

^HOT POOLS! Looking at this picture, I wonder to myself why I even bothered returning to civilization! I was soaking with a lady in the pools who noted of our predicament, as we were sitting there in awe of the mountains, brids, and supremely excellent water around us: "this is worth a million dollars". Fuck if that wasn't the truth!

This last picture is the 'hut' I stayed at. There are something like 900 huts in NZ, all over the backcountry. They vary substantially in size and quality -- some are like run-down storage sheds, some are like million-dollar lodges. The materials to build them are often flown in with choppers, so these things crop up in some pretty remote spots. The huts -- and more generally, all the backcountry infrastructure -- are awesome. In many cases you don't need to carry a tent or sleeping pad to hike. They're stocked with plush mattresses, running water, and stoves. Many times, I had huts to myself. Basically, you're totally spoiled.

If you enjoy the outdoors you would absolutely love New Zealand. A very relaxed, beautiful country that's a breath of fresh air in a number of ways.

New Zealand is the best country IMO but then again I'm a little biased.

Glad to hear you enjoyed my homeland as much as I do. Nothing better than sitting in the hot pools on a drizzly day admiring the scenery with some nice NZ green.  :smoker:

It has long been a desire of mine to explore the mountainous wilderness of NZ. Once I master my fly-fishing skiils, I plan to venture that way and fish the mountain streams and lakes for wild trout and salmon.

God damn that is awesome, loving the hot pools and especially those huts. That's a really cool thing to have out there.
Awesome man.

Awesome!

I also love New Zealand.
Stayed there for 6 months some two years ago. Did most of my hiking in New Zealand may and june.
And I haven't even been on the North Island, just because there was so much to see on the South Island.

The huts are great and can be found everywhere, not only on the great walks.

I want to go back there ever since I left... and I will.

On my way up to the Luxmore hut, the Kepler track, South Island.

edit: I see this post is 2 years old  That means we could have met...

Didn't even notice this was old, wow.
Also, I could be savagely and brutally dismembered by whatever horrific beasts NZ has to offer in that patch of woods and still die a very happy man.

NZ does not offer horrific beasts! At least on land.
There are only a few very rare spiders that are venomous but seldom deadly.

Taken from the Abel Tasman track:

The huts are fantastic!

Here are some of the larger well equipped huts, but there is a whole range in size, quality and service:

Huts are free for hikers?
My bro lives on the north island so I know I'll make it down that way someday.
I cannot believe if they are, or are they like little bed and breakfasts scattered about the area?
Wow.
I already knew how beautiful a country it was , but I cannot even imagine.
Can't wait

yeah, I wanna know more too...
They are just little shacks or whagt appear to be close to mansions in the woods, scattered throughout the island? Free for anyone to use? With electricity?
Who makes them? Maintains them? What's to stop someone from making it their permanent residence and saying fuck it to taxes?
Seems to good to be true.

> Huts are free for hikers?
No, they are not free. Depends on the hut and season. The smaller huts or off season great walk huts are something like $5. You can also buy a pass for a year for about $100.

The great walks are very popular and need hut reservation. I advice to go off season though.

> are they like little bed and breakfasts scattered about the area?
No, they are huts. Very few are staffed and only in summer. Huts provide a place to sleep and water. Most are very basic, but that's all trekkers need right?

> With electricity?
No, most don't have electricity, also no wifi . They are in the middle of nowhere.

> Who makes them? Maintains them?
The department of conservation (DOC).

> What's to stop someone from making it their permanent residence and saying fuck it to taxes?
Not much for the less popular huts. They may check your ticket. Then again, these huts are placed along hiking trails and can't be reached by car, have no electricity or food, etc.

Amazing pics mate
I'm hoping to visit there someday soon. I've been invited by an old Biology professor who recently finished having his house built there. I knw I'll have a blast because I'll be seeing beautiful New Zealand scenery, and getting to do some free study of New Zealand biology.
