Substrate drying out
    #1274793 - 02/03/03 01:59 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

Does anyone notice that some incubators dry out the substrate and others dont? Am I just imagining thing? Your input appreciated!

i've heard that heating methods such as a heating pad will dry it out more than water heating.....
As to the truth of this i'm not sure, i've been using a heating pad and mine looks good and moist.
However out of the jars i will be using something to keep it humid.

Yeah I am wondering the same thing. How can some heating devices dry out the substrate more than others?

I don't think it's possible in the jars because they are a self enclosed environment.

I never completely seal my jars. I always leave the holes open for air exchange.

me too (except for removeing the tape). but there really isn't much air exchange, or moisture exchange. that's why you have to flip them upside down to get the oxegen to the bottom of the jar....? wait does moisture go up or down? (like i know heat goes up lol)

You flip to get the c02 out.

I was just about to ask this question. I mean, I can understand how lights or heating pads might dry out the substrate, but I don't think it could happen until you take off the tapes or loosen the lids (maybe later if growth stalls).... but it seems to me that even if youre using some light that may dry out the jars, couldn't you just put a pan or glass of water right next to it to keep the air moist? Have no idea if that works, but it'd be cool if it did.

if humidity in the incubator is lower then humidity in the jars, the moisture will be drawn out until rh is equalized even through a small hole in the lid of a jar . you may not notice this until ambient rh is below 50% .
barometric pressure works like heat exchange, the grater the difference, the grater the rate of exchange .

exactly... what he said. Actually, I find this to be very true. Right now in my incubator, I have 6 colonizing rye jars, 6 colonizing half pinters, 2 gallons of poo colonizing, and 4 other casings... so when covered, the rh in that container is most likely near 90 percent, as there is always heavy condensation on the bottom side of  the lid.... my substrates dry out much less now that I have started incubating all my projects together in one closed bin. One thing I have to keep in mind however is that it generates a lot of heat... so my fish tank heater is set to keep the water between 80-82 degrees. The mycellium does the rest

Well, I had jars with the holes taped in a rubbermaid and the rh was 30% higher inside the rubbermaid than rh in the room. This makes me think that even sealed jars will let out some moisture into the air. Thus any incubator that is not completely sealed off from the outside world will probably dry the jars faster.

This is true.....i just wanted to believe that it didn't dry out, because i live in a very dry climate. oh well at least i can dunk em.
i've noticed my shoebox was a little more damp when i started incubating, but now it's as dry as the air, i should probably put some damp rags in there or something lol
cool post, thanks every1
