Ive got an idea..
    #1274724 - 02/03/03 01:43 PM (21 years, 1 month ago)

Can I case my cakes by.... Putting a 2 inch layer of perlite on the bottom of a rubbermaid container, then breaking up the cake and putting it on top? with nothing on top of that? will it still work? or no.

Sounds like a bad idea! Why would you want to do this?? Just use one of the tried and true methods. Verm and coir sounds like the way to go.

Then make the top layer perlite. I have seen it be done before.

Good luck.

It sure will be an interesting experiment. Your leaving it up to the cakes to provide all the nutrients for the flush since all the perlite is doing is providing humidity. Be interested to see how it turns out though.

Or you could possibly...ask, "why hasn't my mycobag pinned.??". And try to remedy the problem...But if you must case...maybe you could find other casing materials other than verm..or perlite. ..Try.. looking at the TEK's or maybe a search....I'm sure you may find something...

alright.. so what your saying is I SHOULDNT case w/ just perlite? i mean... wouldnt it be the same as throwing the cake in a terranium with a dish of perlite? and does the cake need nutrients to pin?

Verm. has no nutriets in it. Perlite doesn't work like verm. perlite is aquaphobic and pushes moisture into the air, verm. retains moisture so the surrounding plant life can draw from it as needed. thats why verm. is a soil additave, to hlep the soil retain water.

Of course cakes need nutrients to pin.

Using perlite as a casing medium will work.  I saw it with my own two eyes. :smirk:

Yea use perlite basically the casing layers main purpose is to hold in moisture and perlite will do that.

Wont putting Perlite on the bottom of the casing make the casing too moist from the mositure that the perlite will give off?

You know I had the same problem with finding ver, ended up foiinding it in a pet store!! they use it for turtles or something, but you can use peat, I know you can find that.

my thought was that the casing layer needed to retain moisture???

perlite does the opposite of this!! even if it works, it's not the best...

Use peat moss to make that layer!! i'm sure you can find this!!

perlite would be wayy to dry on the top..

on the bottom tho, maybe, as it will prevent oversaturating, and will provide water to your cake above.. but no perlite on top in my opinion

Ok, Here we go/ The Mycobag will almost always work properly even without the perfect conditions. so if patience isn't working for you, there may a problem with over incubation. It's best if they brought into fruiting conditions, when they are just over 3/4 grown through. I have seen where people have injected them and forgot about them, and they were perfectly good for a cake method, but over incubation, month &1/2- 2 months, could set it behind a little.
How long did you keep it in the dark??

Do you have a Lowes anywhere near you? I also had problems finding verm this time of year (northern USA in dead of winter = gardening shit in short supply) and someone referred me to Lowes. They had a ton of the stuff, and it's the coarse type most ppl prefer.
