My new DIY magnetic stirrer.
    #12746470 - 06/15/10 11:50 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I've read a little about using a magnetic stirrer for aerating liquid cultures and speeding up the LC process. I have never used one, but decided to throw one together out of some crap that I had laying around the house.

I just used a magnet from an old hard drive, a computer fan, a dc converter, scrap wood and a cd case.

I plan on inoculating from LC instead of spores.

Here are a couple pics of my new toy.

I am wondering if the vortex that it creates is just a bit excessive though. Since I am not inoculating using spores and have decided to do LC to LC, will this be a problem?

As you can see, there are plenty of air bubbles throughout the fluid, but is this to much?

It looks :awesome:

Did you make it based on a tutorial?

Looks good considering the professional lab grade stirrer's are expensive as all hell.

IDK about the speed... It looks a little excessively fast, considering there is a vortex in the middle, give it a try and find out.

I got the idea from a tutorial, but I just used what I had on hand. I just kinda winged it. The price was right. . .free.

It does look a little fast. You can add something called a potentiometer in between the wall jack and your stirrer. It is basically a knob which you can turn to make the speed variable. You should be able to pick one up at your local radio shack.

What are you using in the jar as the spinning thing......? I saw someone who made one of these and the best solution he found to get the right amount of vortex was to cut a 1/2 inch tiny bit of wire and use that in the jar, it was silent and created the right amount of turbulence.

I'm using a bit of wire (3mm-ish thick) and almost an inch long. Maybe I'll try a smaller piece. Thanks for the idea.

I tried using smaller wire as suggested by Bene. I cut up a coated clothes hanger into 1/2 inch pieces. Does this look better?

The main vortex goes down about an inch at most, but there is a very fine line from the bottom of the larger vortex to the bottom of the jar that looks like a stream of air. It creates tiny air bubbles throughout the liquid. I didn't adjust the speed, just the size of the wire in the jar. Will this work?

You know those plug in light dimmers? They can be used to lower/speeden the speed.

I like your creation though! Maybe you could try adding hot glue or something to the wire to make it more resistant and create more friction, so its slower. I don't know what shape is a good idea though.

I pressure cook the stir bar with the liquid cultures, so hot glue wouldn't work. That gives me an idea though. . .

I was worried about my ghetto stir bars rusting eventually since the metal is exposed on the ends (I used a coated clothes hanger). Maybe I could try coating them in RTV sealant so the metal is not exposed to oxygen.

I might just try the dimmer/potentiometer idea, but I was just looking for a solution that didn't involve me spending money. I'm one poor mofo, but I'm sure I could spend a few dollars on my stirrer. It's been free so far.

Ahh.. I think I know what my my problem is, I used 2 of those magnets. They don't seem to crab anything atm.

Anyway, well done!
