The mycelium should hold it together just fine. Just be careful and don't bend it in half or tear huge chunks out of it or anything.

what would happen if they were not completely dry? i keep them in a glad container in an a/c vent. will it make someone sick if they eat them?

they will rot if not completely dry. And yes you will get very sick from eating rotten mushrooms.
I keep mine in a brown paper sack in the fridge after they're completely dry.

depends on the conditions.
i read a post that fresh mushrooms could be refrigerated about 10 days before rotting.
keep in mind that information is purely anecdotal.
edit: once dried though they last basically forever.

If they aren't totally cracker dry and you seal 'em up in a baggie or jar, they will begin to rot in a matter of hours.
Nothing worse than going through all that effort only to come back to find a bag full of black nastiness!

They were just dry on the out side, how did you dry them? i would sit them out, and let them finish drying, put a fan on them. never tried the shoe, packet bet it is like decedent.

They won't rot if you put them in a brown paper bag, even if they're dry on the outside but not 100% cracker dry. I dry mine out in front of fans and ten keep in wooden cigar boxes until dinner-time. Plastic bags will rot them though, don't use.

Put your fresh picked crop and place in a shoe box for a day or two at room temp! works well for m3. dries those mush up real good

I don't put mine in airtight containers, just used cigar boxes from the cigar shop ($1 each). They could rot in a glad container if not dried 100%.

How can you tell if they are rotten without eating them? I think my whole batch might be rotten cuz I used a glad container
