Agaricus arvensis?
    #12743472 - 06/14/10 07:34 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Found these while out running today... They were growing right at the base of a Maple tree.  Sorry the pics aren't the best; I was in a hurry!

I'm pretty sure these are Agaricus arvensis, but when I looked them up in my book upon arriving home, I was concerned to find that there is a poisonous lookalike:  Agaricus xanthodermus.  According to my book, the undesireable one will lack a fragrant odor and have yellow flesh at the stalk base.  I know there was not yellow flesh at the stalk base (although the stalk did bruise yellow).  If I go back tomorrow and sniff these mushrooms, and they have an "almond-anise" odor, can I cook these up and eat them???

If they smell good, you can give them a try.

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

The annulus just don't look right for arvensis, they have a double. Based on that they are closest to A. campestris

Cool, thanks for the okay, Bob!

It's been awhile since I've been able to eat anything I've found, so I'm excited to go sniff these guys!

Hmm... The veils on the mushrooms I found match the description of A. arvensis much better than that of A. campestris in my book.  Also, the gills on the younger specimens were not pink.  They are both choice edibles, though, so either way I'd be happy!

You should punch it in a search engine and the arvensis has a very distinct double ring, it looks like a star, maybe yours is an arvensis

As long as they don't smell like ink before or during cooking, you should be able to eat them.

I don't like the discoloration in the centre of the cap. Reminds me of A. Moelleri (syn. A. praeclaresquamosis) which is yucky, and which I've been finding recently. Give it a whiff- especially at the base of the stem. That's where I find most of the phenolic odors.

I advise any noob looking to identify mushrooms to fill out the ID form and provide clear photographs. Knowledge is a privilege and deserves respect. Let's give due props to the experts!
