Can we ban "donation threads"? * 8
    #12741110 - 06/14/10 11:45 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

They're just getting ridiculous...  What will happen to this site if it becomes a haven for "criminals" to get funding for legal help?

What happens when one of these people decides to take the money and flee the country?  And then they investigate into it and see that this forum helped fund the person's escape?

It's going to bring trouble sooner or later.  Not to mention fake cries for help by junkies who need some extra cash, or endless "I need money for my speeding ticket/dick enlargement/toenail clippers" threads...

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who could not hear the music.

I second this.

Pandering for money on a public forum is not good for the community, IMO.

I agree.

The Vandago thread should have never existed in the first place, and then the platinum/yogabunny fiasco really made me think it was a scam.

Call me a tinfoiler but I don't trust y'all as far as I can throw you.

I know it was.  See last sentence.

I don't think Vandago, MisterMuscaria, or Plantinum/Yogabunny were fake, but I know that there will be fake ones popping up if this continues.  I don't have anything against the people who have had funds set up for them, and I actually like alot of those people alot.  However, the fact of the matter is that when it's all said and done, these types of fundraisers have a huge potential for being a detriment to the community as a whole.

I'm sad that you didn't like my dick enlargement thread.

I'm going to cry till I'm dehydrated.

(please send money for beverages so I may rehydrate myself)

On a more serious note...... I agree with the request to end "donation" threads.

Fitting, it's just like America. A community that can't help itself.

Go OTD and all the haters! As long as the crybabies are happy and the influx of tards is allowed then the ad revenues will grow.

Next on the Ballot: Banning PMs

They could be used for illegal activity you know.

On a side note I hear the "Hot Sauce" trade is booming.

I'm in favor of the Shroomery becoming the benefactor of an established charity, for instance MAPS or a third world orphanage or something along those lines, decided by a vote among the general membership, and I could see a seasonal donation dive happening. Its all around good karma for the community even if we only come up with some bills, nickles and a button. If you want to give, give, if you don't then - fine - don't.

But these donations to member in need.. In theory it could be something good but in practice its a huge slippery slope. We have members fiending for drugs and many others are generally in poor financial condition.

It could set us up to scamming, and people joining for the purpose of milking the cash cow. Some people would be mighty tempted to abuse/exploit the system and then you get a disturbing mixture of members who think someone is scamming and members who believe they aren't, members who are tired of yet another donation thread and members exclaiming how that is fucked up and dissocial..

The Shroomery's motto is to help people make informed decisions on what to put in their bodies and has a strong freedom agenda. With freedom, often forgotten, comes the requirement of taking responsibility.

Responsibility for your drug use in the public eye. Informing yourself on handling the law and avoiding it. Responsibility to take life as it comes and play the cards you are dealt.

I feel its best we do away with future donation threads to encourage responsibility among the membership and to avoid driving a wedge between members, as handouts often do.

That said, I'm all for the Shroomery becoming a periodical or structural donator to charity.

For instance theres third world orphanages like this one. $29 a month, less than a dollar a day, provides full care for one child for a month, including food, clothing, primary school education, medicine and counseling. In other words, it allows them to put up an extra bed and take care of one extra child who otherwise would live on the streets. Then you're doing something REALLY substantial as a community. I'm positive we can get that going and those who don't like it - hey you don't HAVE to donate. "Thanks to the Shroomery some kid doesnt have to live on the street but gets food, a roof over their head and an education". Isn't that awesome?

It would be quite easy to setup a mailing list amongst friends to help each other out financially.
