Why are massive oil spills not seen as a large scale natural distaster worth preventing?

I don't get it. If a nuclear power plant has a meltdown it really screws up the environment for a long time. When an oil tanker or oil rig blows up, it screws up the environment for a long time.

Nuclear radiation is worse then the toxicity of oil, but not buy much. All the people within the region where the oil spilled will have higher rates of disease and thus incurred medical expenses.

It is going to continue to happen ever 5-10 years given the current statistical probability with the current safety level of oil production and transportation. At what point does preventing the accident from occurring outweigh the destruction it causes and loss of economics from the production distribution?

Wtf is this bullshit?

Do you have any idea at all what caused the fuck up and why the same procedure has been performed hundreds of times previously without incident?

Do you know about the miles of oil booms in warehouses that are not being deployed?  Or about the scrubber/sipper ships that aren't here because of some easily set aside ancient protectionist law?

It seems to me that the Present is actively engaged in making this be as harmful as possible so that he can gull some more dimwitted fools into crippling the entire economy, and not just the Gulf, with idiotic strictures.  Remember, "Never let a crisis go to waste."  Even if you have to make one.
