Just Out-Ran a Cop - Advice wanted.
    #12724315 - 06/11/10 01:28 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

This [may have] just happened.

I was on my way home from the bar, fairly buzzed but not quite drunk, and had driven maybe 4 or 5 miles with the same SUV behind me.  It was dark green from what I could tell so I didnt think it was a big deal and I had been speeding the whole way (5-10 over). I'd also sent a couple texts too so may have swerved a little and drawn attention.
After I passed an overpass that most people exit at, I saw that the SUV was still following me. I started to think he might be a cop.  Normally I wouldn't sweat it much, but I would have been a in a lot of trouble had the cop searched my car, or even given me a breathalyzer, probably.  So, I sped up a little and he followed and turned on his flashing lights, so I floored the pedal on my windy country road that I've driven a million times.  My suspicions were confirmed, it was definitely a cop.  If he wasn't going to pull me over before, he was definitely going to try to now.  Keep in mind that there was a significant distance between me and the cop the whole time since I had initiated the chase.

The speed limit is 25 MPH and raises to 35 MPH and I was going 50-70 most of the way.  I skidded really hard twice (around turns that I won't normally speed much on) and for a moment thought I might lose it... but I managed to follow through the curves. I'm sure there are skid marks in a couple spots, but none that would give away my location.
I speed, a lot, basically every time I drive the road because the curves are angled so well and I think the speed limit is unnecessarily slow.  I'd wondered, since I started driving, if a cop would stand a chance during a pursuit on my road.  As I suspected, I was able to maneuver the turns much better than his SUV and the woods provided good cover on the dark night.

So now, the important part:

I'm worried now that maybe the cop ran my tags before I hit the gas and that now he knows who the car's registered to, and the address.  I took anything that the cop wouldn't like out of the car and have been hanging out inside.  I've not heard any sirens since a minute or so after I got in.  I live just outside of town limits in a private neighborhood, so town cops can't ride it... only state troopers and county cops can ride it, and I think that's only if they have a good reason to.
Could they possibly use stoplight cameras to pick out my car?  Could the cop, if he ran my tags, charge me if he didn't catch me at that moment?  How would he know that it was me driving?

If I'm asked about this, I plan on saying that I didn't know a cop was behind me because I had a decent lead before the cop turned his lights on and the camera doesn't start til the lights turn on anyway.

Do you guys think I'm OK here?  Anyone else have firsthand experience with this?  What power do cops have in situations like this?  Even if they knew what car it was by the plate, what could they do?

I'm really not worth their time, especially for them to track me down using my IP.  If I thought I was, I wouldn't be posting this.

the cops would come to your place within a few hours and charge you with speeding, fleeing and escaping etc... since you are not someone important to them, they will not care who or what is posted online.

Id relax if I were you but hide ur contraband in a safe place just in case

Don't say a fucking thing. If you admit that you were driving you might incriminate yourself!

Several other people will chime in with the same advice because it is really important.

You admit no guilt by being silent. Anything you say will be used against you. If they come to talk to you, don't even answer the door.

I don't know if they have grounds for a warrant to search the house the car was registered to. I would imagine not, but perhaps they think you are dangerous with the speeding... I don't know though, but it would be the only thing I would be thinking about right now if I was you.

If anything comes of this, do not talk to the police about any of it. Don't try to make excuses or anything like that, just keep your mouth shut, and get a lawyer. Also I would edit your post to make it a little more anonymous or hypothetical but that's just me.

Of the people I know who claim to have sped away from police (or run), none of them have been caught. Some of these stories are credible, some perhaps less so...but it seems the reality of running from the cops certainly doesn't reflect what you see on COPS and shit, where they always catch the folk. Many fish get away, but they don't want anyone to know that.

EITHER WAY,

They cannot prove it was YOU in the car.

Hell, someone MIGHT have stolen your car for a joyride and put it right back when they were done.

You're fine. DONT WORRY ABOUT SHIT.

I have a friend that is a cop in the city I used to live in. He told me that he has had three people speed away from him and he refused to chase. His reasoning was it was too much paperwork and too much liability. If he chased and there was an accident it would come back to him. As for them looking for you, its 50/50. If they have nothing better to do then they might, but for the most part they hate doing paperwork...

That must have been quite the adrenaline rush.

You should be fine as long as he didnt run your plates.

Don't cops have cameras in their car though? As shown on the hit TV show.. cops

the cameras dont come on til the cops hit the lights.
yes, god my adrenaline was off the charts after that.

also, i know not to say anything to the cops, if i ever was questioned i would normally request a lawyer first.
however, i'm at my moms for the summer and mom and sis knew i was gone, in my car, driving, and would surely tell the police.  so my story was a cover on both ends.

anyway, i dont think anything ever came from, but i left town two days later and have been on vacation since.  i suspect this whole thing to blow over.  i've learned a valuable lesson about leaving the bars late at night.

Well, I could be wrong. It just seems to me they'd have gotten ahold of you by now. They may just be biding their time, though. :justdontknow: You could call them and find out - from a safe location, of course.
